Our speaker today was our own Ron Hollenbeck, speaking on the Zambia Life Pump.
Ron Hollenbeck shared our club has been involved with Design Outreach, the maker of the Life Pump, for around 10 years. In 2014, our club made our first donation to install these water pumps. In 2018, pumps funded in part by our club were installed in Haiti, and more installed in Malawi in 2023. The new focus today is in Zambia.
Who is Design Outreach (Columbus, OH)? In the fall of 2013, Design Outreach installed their first pump in Zolomondo, Malawi and it has run non-stop since then. It is very unusual to not have breakdowns with other water pumps installed around the world. So far, they have put in 262 pumps with a goal to reach 1,000. Over 230,000 lives have been impacted by supplying a clean, reliable water source..
Ron said often times pipes are installed without anything at the end to control the flow of water, so it just runs constantly. He demonstrated a Design Outreach Pipe Stand - gravity fed to control the flow of water.
The Life Pump can go down 500 feet, deeper than most other pumps. If have to go lower than 150 feet to reach water, the Malawi Ministry of Water now mandates the Life Pump.
Design Outreach has the ability to monitor the pumps remotely. They can see how many times the hand crank is turned. If there is a decline in turns, they return to see what’s wrong and fix it.They would like to have electricity but most use a hand pump. They tried solar power in some locations, but it always disappeared
There is a documentary available on the Design Outreach website that can be viewed here:

The Zambia communities with the greatest need have been identified Rotary International has to review the proposed project, including making sure they can be maintained.
This water project is a collaboration between Districts 6690 and 6670 to install 6 pumps, provide pump training, water education, and empowering community leaders to become health ambassadors.
Project budget is $103,000. Final global grant submission will be in June followed by RI approval. Then within a year, the 6 pumps will be installed.
Over $300,000 raised here for the 20 pumps installed in Malawi.
Borehole drilling cost is included. They drill to a depth to have water throughout the dry season. Ron has helped install some of the pumps in Malawi. It takes 10-12 people to install each pump.
President Manning thanked Ron for all his great work on the Life Pump program, led reciting of the 4-Way Test, and wished everyone a great week.
