Rotary Monthly Theme:
Peace and Conflict Prevention and Resolution
President Brian Hayes welcomed everyone to the Centerville Rotary Club Zoom and led the Pledge of Allegiance. PDG Harvey Smith provided the prayer.

Thought of the moment – is from Politician and Civil Rights Activist, John Lewis who said, “Not one of us can rest, be happy, be at home, be at peace with ourselves, until we end hatred and division.”

Club announcements today included:

Mike Wier noted for the Dayton Dragon’s baseball game, we have 13 signed up out of 60 seats, so let Mike know you can attend! Will open up to other family members, potential members or other Rotary clubs if we can’t fill the seats with Centerville Rotarians. The game is May 3, beginning at 7 pm.

Carol Kennard reminded everyone to get their 50th anniversary t-shirt orders in by this weekend. Email cgkennard@woh.rr.com, or call/text (937)581-6744.

Kim Senft-Paras shared the 50th Anniversary tidbit for today.

She also mentioned we are looking to partner with District 6670 Peace committee.
This month’s Rotary magazine cover story on Phenom, (who is a peace ambassador) was a really good one.

Kim shared a video showing Rotary Peace Ambassadors in Action around the world. You can view it HERE.

If you have a passion and desire to make change in the world, you’re the right person for the Peace Ambassador program.

This quarter we are collecting  Recovery Bucks to help relief efforts in Kentucky where they had all of that devastation from tornadoes.

Our Sergeant of Arms today was Boyd Preston. Please mail your donations to:
Centerville Rotary Club | PO Box 41431 | Centerville | OH | 45441-0431

  • Harvey Smith $21 for the Bengals who played a good game in the Super Bowl

Our speaker this week was Matt Wahrhaftig with the Kettering Health Foundation, who is also a member of the Kettering Rotary Club.

Matt said he is the Director of Annual Funds where he oversees fundraising efforts and programs for the Kettering Health Foundation. He is one of 11 staff.

They support efforts of multiple facilities; they are one of 4 foundations that support Kettering Health. The Foundation started in 1987 and raises money to support as many efforts as possible. They are a separate non-profit entity with their own board of directors. They are a separate entity from Kettering Health but their priorities are aligned.

Last year they raised over $2.6 million and distributed $1.3 million to support patients, students, and employees. Supply chain issues and timing delayed distribution of the rest.

They are most proud of a $1 million gift to support Molecular imaging.

Women’s Wellness Fund was started to cover mammograms for those not funded by health insurance. Most insurance funds them now so they pivoted to cover other items not covered by insurance. The program is supported through fund raising events. Since 1995, they have supported 15,000 women.

Hope Pharmacy is located in poverty areas where people have to choose between putting food on the table or medicine. They might stop taking the medicines or spread it out, and a month or two later, they are back in the ER. They are trying to break that cycle to improve their position in life. Kettering Health Foundation developed a partnership with the Dispensary of Hope who receives donate medication that is within 2 years of expiration (would otherwise be thrown out.) They identify people at risk of poverty, and provide medication to them free of charge.
The Hope Pharmacy is current at the Grandview, Cassano and Main campuses with hopes to expand.

The Kettering Health Foundation participated in the enhancements to our Molecular Imaging. Kettering is one of only two facilities in the nation that has a cyclotron, thanks to the generosity and foresight of Virginia Kettering. They now have a brand new PET scan (Foundation donated $1 mill), which allows them to get molecular level information on cancer cells. It allow them to identify and treat on a cellular level, detecting tumors not seen on other scans. It shows a much more accurate picture and can administer pinpoint doses of therapeutic agent to the specific cancer areas.

Matt said this has huge implications for other cancers including breast cancer, Early Alzheimer’s detection, and improved cardiac molecular. A recent donor gave $1 million, and wanted to continue the legacy of innovation in Dayton.

Lucas Devices - one costs $12,000 and It does mechanical CPR compressions. Funded one and now working to add 17 so they are in all emergency rooms in the area.

They look for opportunities to “seed change”

Fundraising events include:
  • Golf Classic - June 20 at NCR Country Club
  • Heart to Heart - September 20 is a black tie dinner with a special guest - last year was Smokey Robinson (all proceeds go to heart and vascular programs)
  • Ribbon of Hope luncheon - October 14. Joan Lunden is the presenter this year and it raises money for women’s wellness.
  • Pinktober telethon, raises awareness of breast cancer and other women’s issues.

President Brian thanked Matt for the great presentation and announced next week our speaker will be Chris Stanley from the Fisher-Nightingale House

He also remind about the Board Meeting Monday at 5:30 pm so watch for the Zoom link email.

President Brian led the group in reciting the Four-Way Test and wished all a good week.
