Other guests: Pat Beckel’s wife, Hao Beckel, Bob Stoltz, Jaxon Eggleston and prospective members Pat Turnbull & Tyler Roark with the City of Centerville.

Announcements:
  • Thanks to the greeters today: Ron Bowersocks and Chuck King.
  • Pancake committee met today. Please pick up a sponsorship sheet and everyone get at least one sponsor! Boyd Preston added that we ask all club members to be involved in this major fundraiser. One commitment is to sell 20 tickets @ $8 each. If you joined since January this year, there is a reduced expectation, but you can always sell more! You can be invoiced for your tickets if you want, just mark it on the sheet that’s being passed around the meeting the next couple of weeks. Tickets were stuffed in envelopes today after the meeting.
  • The next Board meeting is Monday, August 28, 5:30 pm at Woodbourne Library. Adam attended a Zoom on building Rotary membership and will share information he learned at the Board meeting.
  • Upcoming Birthday on Aug 29 - Harvey Smith turns 90! Happy Birthday, Harvey!
  • Reminder about the social on Wednesday, August 30 from 5:30-7 pm at Sueno, 607 East 3rd Street, Dayton. We will also be collecting used cell phones, charging blocks and cables to donate to Artemis Center who recycles them and gives to women in need. Will even take non-working phones. Sueno has authentic Mexican cuisine. RSVP now to Kelly McDonald.

Happy Bucks this quarter are going toward Hannah’s Treasure Chest for Operation Warm, providing winter coats to children in need. Our Sergeant at Arms today was Pat Beckel, with assistance by Brian Hayes.

The final bottle of bourbon was raffled off with Lisa Goris May winning it for $200!

Happy Bucks were generously given for:
  • Pat Beckel was happy his wife was spending the day with him at work.
  • Ray Merz gave thanks for last week when he left his cell phone at the table. By the time he realized it and came back and pulled up to the building, Rand Oliver and Adam Manning were standing there with his phone!
  • Harvey Smith gave for 4 coats in celebration of his 90th birthday.
  • Elda Gotos Gay matched Harvey’s donation.
  • Sofie Ameloot gave thanks for those who are supporting this year’s Tour de Gem. She has raised $705 so far for the Rotary foundation.
  • Lori Goris May paid for the bourbon and coats.
  • Chuck King had a good vacation at the Ford Museum and Mackinac Island.
  • Boyd Preston for Pancake Day and the great support from our club members.
  • Adam Manning was happy for our guests, speaker Dan Edwards, and that Ray didn’t see the selfies he put on his phone :-)
  • Carol Kennard asked everyone to break protocol and take out their phones, get on the Centerville Rotary Club’s Facebook page and like, share, and comment on the most recent post about Pancake sponsor opportunities.
  • Jeff Senney was happy his wife, Sharon was coming home from babysitting grand babies.
  • Dale Berry for Operation Warm.
  • Don Stewart said he and his partners went to Louisville and stayed at the historic Brown Hotel, a very cool place to visit.
  • Wyatt Thorp announced his son Palmer will be 2 months old on Saturday, and his wife Kayla is doing great. September 25 Camp Kern has a golf outing at the Dayton Country Club. Cost is $700 per foursome, which helps to sends kids to camp. See Wyatt for more information or to sign up.

  • Ron Bowersocks was happy.
  • Ron Hollenbeck was glad to see Pat’s wife, and was looking forward to the speaker today so maybe he can figure out the body language signals his wife sends.

Our speaker today was Dan Edwards speaking about body language.

Dan is a voice over artist, Emmy nominated TV reporter and anchor, professional development speaker, body language instructor, and Adjunct Professor at the University of Dayton. He also hosts the show, Greater Dayton with Dan Edwards, highlighting unsung heroes in our area.

Dan shared that individuals make up their mind about you in the first tenth of a second. How you present yourself is important.

The two words that are most important in a relationship: “I understand.” Men tend to go into “How do I fix this problem mode,” which makes it appear they are not listening. His advice is to just listen and then say, “I understand.“

Dan met someone by chance who was a body language coach, and the idea intrigued him. For years, consultants had been telling him what to dress, how to sit, how to talk, etc, when working in television.

Dan observed Fortune 500 Executives giving poor delivery, which prompted him to make a goal: To help make you a better person, which ultimately makes a better community.

Dan attended the Body Language Institute in Washington, D.C.

Words can lie, body language cannot.

Dan shared survey results asking the question, “If you could have a super power, what would it be?” The most popular answer was mind reading.

How you move speaks volumes as 93% of interpersonal communication is nonverbal.

Have to be:
  • Observant
  • Heightened intellect
  • Go with your gut feeling
  • Listen to your Mama’s voice
Your gut figures it out long before your mind does.

Body language began with the yawning of the cave men - it was a symbol to encourage others to lie down and rest.
Mirror neuron - you yawn, I yawn.

Seven universal expressions:
Fear
Anger
Sadness
Disgust
Happiness
Content

Dan shared a Harvard study that showed when doctors know good body language, patients get better faster, because you’re perceived as caring.

President Manning thanked Dan for the great information and announced next week our speaker is Michelle Lovely from the Dayton Foundation.
