This is her first meeting, and she said she was impressed by the friendliness and good cheer in the group.   Our guest speaker, Washington Twp. Fire Chief Scott Kujawa, became the area's new chief on March 21, 2019, following the retirement of Chief Bill Gaul.   Carol Kennard and Gerry Eastabrooks are greeted by President Preston.   Carol in turn stops to greet Don, John and Tom.   Talk about a fun bunch...This happy group just couldn't line up for a four-some picture without laughing.     Here we see Jim Harris peering at the Fire Levy brochure and others in a more serious mood.     Ram Nunna (R) has brought along a guest, Sury Peddireddi (left of him in picture).   Here's Sury again.   It was a good day for guests. Frank mentioned the four groups that served on April 6 as listed below:   Foodbank of Dayton - packing food - APRIL 6 Project Read - sorting and packing books - APRIL 6...  Centerville-Washington Park District - sorting and cleaning a garage area - APRIL 6 St. Leonard's - light gardening & painting - APRIL 6   and then mentioned the two upcoming service days:    Hannah's Treasure Chest - repack diapers for distribution at local charities - APRIL 13 BOGG Ministries - distributing food, playing children's games, etc. - APRIL 16   Frank said thus far this year 65 percent of the club membership has participated in service projects.   Doc Hoback said they had two cases of wine brought in and money for more, making the wheelbarrow worth about $480 for the auction at the District 6670 Conference. (see picture below in Happy Bucks info.)   Ron Hollenbeck said the water pump grant project is coming along. He noted that a 500-foot bore hole was put in northwestern Haiti on a hospital property by LifePump here in Ohio that provides water 11 to 12 hours a day. He said ten locations have been identified for ten water pumps in Haiti. Now we need a number of endorsements to get the Rotary International grant  for the pumps, he said. One of the most important endorsements for the grant is by a committee that Barry Rassin, the current president of Rotary International, is on, he said.   Ann Blackburn mentioned at a previous meeting that membership profiles still need some updating and that adding biographical material would be good. She said the next social with be at the Old Bag of Nails on April 17 (changed from Thursday). We have an area reserved for our April Mixer at Old Bag Of Nails:   When:  April 17, 5 p.m.-7 p.m. Where: Old Bag of Nails              101 E Alexandersville-Bellbrook Rd Ste 191              Centerville (at west end of CrossPointe Center)   Carol Kennard mentioned that the Interact Club at Centerville High School would be meeting at 3 p.m. this day (April 11)  to paint the primer on the tables at the shelter, and then again from 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. April 27 at Oak Grove Park on Social Row Road, to paint the game boards the Interact students have designed for the tables. Terry Hanauer has sanded the tables and has offered to head up the April 27 meeting as well as attend the meeting today. Jeff Senney and Doc Hoback also volunteered to help.   At a previous meeting Pat Beckel announced several fun events coming up that are sure to create great memories. DATE NIGHT - May 2 at Benham's Grove includes games (for adults) such as the Newlywed Game and other fun activities. CIGAR & BOURBON EVENT - in May at Benham's Grove, $100 per person SECOND FRIDAY EVENTS - May through August at Normandy Square   President Boyd Preston mentioned again the District 6670 Conference April 11-13.    Last week he passed around a book of gratitude given to the club for its seven years of participation in Operation Warm, providing new warm winter coats to area children. Last year the club provided 640 new coats.   Arnie Biondo is still looking for a host family so we can sponsor a female exchange student next year. He suggested asking your friends and neighbors or your church, as the host does not have to be a Rotarian. Jen Gibbs noted before how wonderful the experience was for her entire family when they hosted Rodrigo. They got to learn about his culture, what a fantastic cook Rodrigo is, and they also got to know his parents.    President Preston mentioned at the last meeting and again today that the District 6670 2019 Golf Outing Monday, April 22 at Wetherington Golf & Country Club, 7337 Country Club Drive, West Chester, Ohio. There's a ten a.m. start. Breakfast, hole assignments, course and tourney instructions begin at 9 a.m. Entry fee is $100 per player. It includes continental breakfast, range balls, golf, cart, and lunch. The format is a four-person scramble. Deadline for registration is April 15. Soft spikes only, collared shirts and no denim. Individual entries will be assigned to a foursome.    President Preston said that the next Board meeting will be Monday at 5:30 p.m. at the park district headquarters off Main St. in Centerville, opposite Bill's Donut Shop.   He said Club on the Move news includes Brian Hayes attending the latest Habitat home presentation of five how-to books for new home owners from our Rotary Club, along with books provided by Project Read for the children that will live in the home.   Sgt.-at-Arms Erich Eggers  and Gerry Eastabrooks collected the Happy Bucks for Artemis House, which provides intervention and support for victims of domestic violence. Here you see Gerry Eastabrooks with her tin cup in hand gathering the day's donations.   HAPPY BUCKS: Happy Bucks this quarter go to Artemis House. The program supplies support and intervention for victims of domestic violence.   Erich Eggers is seen below.   A number of happy bucks were given for our guest speaker and other guests and for the Artemis House program. Centerville City Manager Wayne Davis gave for the new fire chief and Lee Hieronymus gave for being Happy to sit next to the city manager. Mark Gerken said he was happy the Blue Jackets won. Ron Hollenbeck gave for the Artemis House and for Bockrath flooring doing a great job in their house. Carol Kennard gave saying she was sorry to not make the Service Day but had been called for another duty. Ray Merz said he had a great honor this weekend when a young man who had been in his Confirmation Class 16 years ago and is now very accomplished, asked if Ray would consider conducting his wedding. John Callander said something about green beans (not on the menu today), and Tom Broadwell said he was happy to see a 79 degree temperature today.  Jim Harris said he is Happy to see the water pump grant process proceeding.  Sofie Ameloot thanked everyone for bringing in new shoes for the Shoes for Orphan Souls project and also asked club members to bring in shampoo bottles for the Artemis House. Doc Hoback thanked everyone for their wine donations for the District Conference, and mentioned that his surgery last week was quick but he wasn't allowed to drive right away.     Mike Wier mentioned a number of upcoming concerts for the British Brass Band he belongs to, including one April 26 at Cedarville, one the 28th at Eton High, and one in Columbus and one in New Carlisle in coming months. Ask him for more details if interested in attending. Adam Manning gave a sad donation for having to attend a funeral and Doug Bockrath gave for Artemis House. Ram and Raj and Sury all gave for being happy to be here and/or support of the Artemis House. Matt Kuhn was Happy, and Rick Hauser gave and Terry Hanauer gave, noting he was happy to get introduced to the Interact Club and to see Dick Hoback back in action. Tom said something about 100 pounds of barbeque and Saturday..a service day. Deb Dulaney gave and then Jeff Senney had what looked like a check and said something about 40 bucks...and Brian Hayes gave noting that his youngest is now 18 years old.  Erich gave noting that he made Sofie Ameloot cry as she tried to sit in Jeff Senney's seat before he arrived to sit by his two guests who were already seated next to the empty seat. The following pictures were from the end of the meeting.       Speaker of the Week: Washington Twp. Fire Chief Scott Kujawa   Washington Twp. Trustee President Dale Berry (R) introduced our speaker, Washington Twp. Fire Chief Scott Kujawa.   Chief Kujawa was featured in the Washington Twp. Quarterly for June-August.   Berry said Chief Kujawa joined the fire department in 1991 as a volunteer and part-time firefighter/paramedic. He became a full-time firefighter in 1998, and was promoted to lieutenant in 2006. Berry said Chief Kujawa graduated from Centerville High School and has a bachelor's degree in fire administration and an associate degree in fire science from Columbia Southern University. His volunteer works includes BOGG, a mobile food pantry, and membership in the Shoes 4 the Shoeless Board of Directors. He is also a member of the Scholarship and Conference committees for the Ohio Fire Chiefs Association.   Chief Kujawa recognized and praised club member Lee Hieronymus who served as a firefighter with the Washington Twp. Fire Department. He spent the rest of the time talking about why the fire department has a need for the 2.85-mill Continuous Levy on the May 7 Ballot. All Washington Twp. residents, including those in the city of Centerville are eligible to vote on the levy. If approved, he said, homeowners will pay $99.75 annually for every $100,000 of home value, based on the current valuation.   The department is currently funded with a 4.65-mill renewal levy and a 1.5-mill continuous levy that together cost $169 annually per $100,000 of home value. The five-year levy was updated in 2013 when a 1.65-mill increase was approved to address the loss of state funding.   The levy would fund additional full-time staff and replace Station 41 on Maple Avenue for one that supports adequate staffing and larger modern apparatus. The estimated cost is $3.7 million, Kujawa said. The property surrounding the station does not have room for expansion, so the station will be moved, he said.   The fire department has a shortage of part-time workers, as most are able to get full time jobs, so they expect to need 42 full-time firefighter positions to be funded at an estimated annual net cost of $4.19 million. This includes 12 firefighters hired in 2018 and 30 additional positions. The full-time staff will be 78 and daily staffing will be about 87 percent full time. If the levy does not pass the fire fund balance will drop to $2.17 million in 2022 and reach a negative balance by 2023, he said. Staffing for a full-time firefighter costs more than twice that of a part-time firefighter, about $1,090 for a 24-hour period, compared to $469. Salary, medical benefits and earned time off contribute to the difference.   The levy, which would generate about $5.26 million in the first year would fund about 31 percent of the departments operating expenses, with the other two levies providing the remainder.   An increase in emergency calls requires more firefighters, Chief Kujawa said. Between 2002 and 2012 the yearly calls rose by an average of 142 per year. Then from 2012 to 2018, the average annual calls increased to 282 calls per year. New construction helped fuel the increase. Bethany Lutheran Village gets about 22 calls a day, and Kujawa said he expects support for the levy to be from many residents there. This is the only issue on the ballot for Washington Twp. residents, so turnout may not be as heavy as in a bigger issue time, he said. Chief Kujawa invited everyone to attend one of the Citizen Fire Academy sessions, open houses, and the annual Ice Cream Social, held on the second Sunday in August. Last year 2,000 people attended, he said. This year's Ice Cream Social, which features fried chicken, hamburgers, pies and ice cream, etc., along with various fire department demonstrations, such as aerial work and car crash exercations, will be Aug. 11 at Station 44 in the Centerville Business Parkway.
