Happy Bucks were generously given for:
  • Kelly M shared at the HTC Breakfast fundraiser this morning, one client talked about having to decide between paying rent or putting winter coats on her kids. Really showed the impact we can make with our support of Operation Warm. Kelly will match $1,000 if same amount is donated today through Happy Bucks.

  • Chuck K for coats
  • Ron H for coats, today’s HTC breakfast where another story shared was a family having to make a choice between buying medicine or clothing for her kids.
  • Dale B for the DDN article, HTC breakfast & coats

  • Brad T for coats
Through Happy Bucks, we collected $1,200, so we reached Kelly’s challenge amount. Thank you all for your generosity!

Our speaker today was Dennis Franklin, District Governor Elect for Rotary District 5300.

Brad Thorp introduced Dennis Franklin, noting they have been friends for 30 years. In fact, he is the one who suggested Brad become a financial advisor. Our club sent $6,300 to their fundraiser to help with the aftermath of the LA Wildfires.

Dennis shared that in the Rotary Club of Altadena 16 of 42 members lost their homes in the wildfires. They experienced miles and miles of burned homes, when 90-100 mph winds came through. Over 6,000 homes were destroyed in an area the size of Centerville

Rotarians jumped  into action immediately. They called all those affected, made sure they had food to eat, clothing on backs, and a place to stay. They set up a foundation to coordinate distribution of funds where needed most. Truckloads of donations came in from everywhere. It was a challenge figuring out how to handle it all. The Altadena club center was the point of contact for assistance. That Club is growing now as people saw what Rotary does in a crisis.
They served over 3,000 people, and partnered with Shelter Box and Red Cross. They provided mental support through phone calls. And set up grants - lots of gift cards - to help pay for anything needed.

President Ameloot thanked Dennis for sharing the information.

Kelly McDonald made a few Golf announcements:
  • Thanks to the golf committee who has put in a lot of work to make the event successful.
  • Big thanks to Sofie, who is a fundraising queen!
  • Thanks to all those who sponsored or got sponsors.
  • Green buckets - in observance of International Compost Awareness week and our Club’s commitment to the environment, we will be using compostable utensils, cups, plates, and napkins which will be collected for composting in green buckets. This supports our efforts to reduce waste.
  • This year’s Hole in One prize is $5,000 in cash.

Kelly noted we have a different story to tell this year at the Golf Outing. Our club has a 13 year partnership with HTC, raising $125,000 over that time to purchase 6,800 coats. The Golf Outing will help to get coats in children’s hands earlier in the season. He invited members to stay and help set up for the Golf Outing.

President Ameloot thanked Dennis and Kelly, reminded all to BRING A FRIEND to Rotary, lead reciting of the 4-Way Test and wished all a good week.
