The Centerville Rotary Club met at noon at the Clubhouse at Yankee Trace Golf Course. President Ron Hollenbeck led the Pledge of Allegiance, PDG Harvey Smith gave the prayer, and Peachy Metzner led the singing of God Bless America

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

President Ron Hollenbeck said again that the club is in line for getting a presidential citation for meeting all the criteria for new memberships, Rotary Foundation giving, service, etc.

He reminded people to bring in wine, shoes and socks, for the April District Conference in Mason.
The club will pick up the $100 cost of the conference, he said.

Ron mentioned the Rotary Leadership program April 22 at the Greene County Career Center. Cost will be picked up by the club.

Boyd Preston urged club members to sign up for our Rotary Service Day, March 18, with March 17 the day for those serving at the House of Bread. There are six options: House of Bread, Centerville-Washington Park District, Daybreak, Hannah's Treasure Chest, Project Read, and St. Vincent dePaul. You can bring along a family member to help out, if you wish. A make-up day can be arranged for those who can't make that service day. Bethany dropped off the list due to some construction work there, Ron said. Also two alternative work days were added, one at Hannah's Treasure Chest next Saturday, and one two weeks after, at the Park District. Boyd said 30 spots were still available. T-shirts are $10 and will be charged to your account when you order one. They are the yellow shirts.

Ron reminded people that March 15 at 5 p.m. Jeff Senney will be hosting the next social for prospective members and current members and their partners. Come one, come all, Jeff says...

Ron said the club received two thank-you notes, one from the Centerville-Washington Twp. Diversity Council for our support for the MLK breakfast, and one from Project Read.

Jim Hester said our exchange student from India, Saloni Bagwani, needs to sell 25 coupon books at $20 each to be on the track and field team at Centerville High School. He had books to sell, and went around the room and collected a lot of $20 bills for the cause. There are 36 different coupons in the book for various restaurants, etc.

HAPPY BUCKS :
Erich Eggers, Sgt.-at-Arms, collected Happy Bucks for Homefull.

President Ron Hollenbeck gave for his wife getting a one-year-old golden retriever mix and still letting him sleep in the house.
Peachy gave thanks for all the people stepping up to be on the boards during the new year, when he will be president of the club. He gave special thanks to Brad Thorp for urging people to step up and become a greater part of the club.
Joyce Young gave for Dr. Suess's birthday and Boyd Preston gave for the 4-Way-Test Speech Contest. Carol Kennard gave a couple dollars, with an apology to Boyd, since she will be out of town on the service day, and the two additional days he added, both for family occasions, one with her grandson.
Dale Berry gave for Mike Cline coming to Rotary, as the branch manager of the new First Financial Bank at the Cornerstone area of Centerville.
Brian Hayes gave a couple Happy Bucks for the Four-Way-Test and Kim Senft-Paras gave several for Brian working hard on the Four-Way Test program.
John Beals also gave for Brian's work, and Tom Broadwell gave for being back from Palm Springs.
Jim Hester gave $5 for being Happy to be here and noted that while he made some disparaging remarks about the Cincinnati Reds at the last meeting, he has decided to pay for all their losses rather than their wins, and had $4 for their four losses in February. "It's better to pay for losses than their wins," he said.
Don Overly gave for UD's victory and OSU's victory over Penn State...which solicited a ooohh over in the vicinity of Carol Kennard's table. Jack Durnbaugh gave for the start of spring training in baseball, and Greg Horn gave for UD winning. A guy in a blue shirt gave for Miami University, and it wasn't Rand Oliver. Deb Dulaney gave for the Four-Way Test and Jeff Senney gave to remind people of the upcoming social at his house, and to also note that he has a new 9-pound baby boy added to the family tree.
Tracie Hoker said she is Happy and Dan Johnson gave for the Flyers win.
Everyone sang Happy Birthday to Tom Broadwell, who had been away.

Brian Hayes then took over from Erich to announce the judges for the 4-Way-Test Speech Contest: Rebecca Quinones, Dale Berry, Harvey Smith, Deb Dulaney, and Graham Ross.

Two of the students who had signed up did not show up. They included: Madison Glover and Anand Shah. That left Sofia Fernandez to make the sole presentation.

Today's Speaker: Sofia Fernandez, giving her 4-6 minute speech for the Rotary 4-Way-Test Speech Contest

Brian said the theme had to involve Leadership, Service to Others, life experiences, and the Rotary 4-Way-Test. The speech has to be within the 4 to 6 minute range, be memorized, with any quotes from others no more than 75 words.

Sofia came to the podium and thanked the Rotary Club for allowing her to participate in the program.

She said everyone has the ability to be a leader, although along the way you may have to learn an important lesson. You may have to learn to be alone.
She said she has always been a "quiet" one. She had a group of friends she associated with so as not to be alone, but over time she learned that their actions were not always appropriate and that they included her in her group because she was willing to pay for them. She said that they berated her behind her back and made fun of her.
She learned that rather than being a follower, she needed to become a leader, even if it meant being alone. She said she hopes one day to become a doctor. That is the truth of the matter.
Is it fair to all concerned, she asked. Their actions are their own, she said. "It is hard to stand alone." Still, "I have made amazing friends," she said. These are kind souls. "It is important to be a leader," she said. She has become a Sunday School teacher and she said she needs to be a role model for her younger sister. Her change gave her the courage to stand up and talk. "Jesus only had four followers to start with," she said. "Hitler had a lot of followers," she said. "You need to stand by yourself," she said.

The judges convened for a while outside the room after Sofia's speech. When they came back in, Brian noted that they planned to lobby for Sofia as the club's candidate in the upcoming Rotary 4-Way Speech Contest held with the other Rotary clubs in the District. They offered Sofia their written comments on her speech, noting that they hope any suggestions they made might make it even better than it was. The club members said they were delighted to hear the positive words and excellent delivery by Sofia.
Greg Horn, our soon-to-be retired Centerville City Manager, got up to remind the club that a number of those who have spoken to Rotary for the 4-Way-Test Speech Contest, have gone on to do great things. He said he looked up one young man, Danny Beaty, now living in New York, who has been very successful as a composer, author, and actor in movies, among other things.

The club members ended the meeting by reciting the words of Rotary's Four-Way Test.
