Club President Vas Appalaneni opened the Centerville Rotary Club meeting at The Clubhouse at Yankee Trace by leading the Pledge of Allegiance, Sivaji Subramaniam gave the prayer, and Pat Beckel led the singing of God Bless America.
The guests at the meeting included: our speakers for the day, Rachel Hurtubise, a Junior at Alter High School, and Peyton Kocevar, a Junior at Alter High School, both participants in the Rotary 4-Way Speech Contest, and their teacher Audrey Miller, who teaches English and Speech at Alter High School. Also, Jennifer Heckman, a Natural Helper Coordinator at the Montgomery County Juvenile Court, attended as the guest of Jeff Senney, who said Jennifer has shown interest in the new Rotary Cocktail Club being formed for young professionals.
ANNOUNCEMENTS:
Club President Vas announced again that our Rotary club will be participating with other chapters in the District in the Buckner Shoes for Orphan Souls shoe drive. New shoes socks, and checks to help buy such items can be dropped off at our club meetings during the month.
Member Dan Johnson said the Centerville Club now has 60 members. He said if by July 4 someone brings in four new members, they will get $50 off their Rotary fees.
BERKEL alert!....Former club member Mae Berkel, on a tour of the U.S., said she will stop by our next meeting. If you never got to meet Mae, you are in for a real treat. She is a great representative of Rotary, and she and her late husband Hans, devoted their time, money, and good fellowship and service to the Dayton Rotary Club and then to the Centerville Rotary. Those who know Mae already should make an effort to be at the meeting to share the joy of her coming back to town for a visit. . . .
Sgt.-at-Arms Erich Eggers collected Happy Bucks for the New Hope Church supply pantry. He said he just came back from Las Vegas and would contribute some of his "winnings" to the Happy Bucks.
Jeff Senney said he was at the recent Rotary Cocktail Club meeting, which had 30 to 40 people in attendance.
Carol Kennard said the Hithergreen Golf Outing May 18 was given a $500 sponsorship from our Rotary Club and that those with businesses might also want to sponsor a cart ($50) or hole ($250), or go for a $1,000 sponsorship, which gets you a month's promotion at Hithergreen and a foursome greens fees and lunch, etc. A $500 sponsorship allows for two greens fees..

Kim Senft-Paras introduced the speakers and spoke about how the 4-Way Test Speech Contest is conducted. She thanked Deb Dulaney for organizing our contest this year and Ron Hollenbeck for his follow-through on all the details for today's meeting. The five judges for the competition included Centerville Rotary members: Cynthi Fraley, Dan Johnson, Jim Harris, Gary Kuntz, and Arnie Biondo. Timing of the speeches was done by Ron Hollenbeck.
The topic for this year's contest is: Leadership, Service and the Four-Way Test
The Rotary Four-Way Test
Is it the TRUTH?
Is it FAIR to all concerned?
Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
The contestant must apply the Rotary Four-Way Test to the concepts of leadership, service to others and life experience.
Delivery: The speech is to be presented from memory without the aid of podium, notes, displays or props.
Length: The speech must be no less than four minutes and no more than six minutes. Any speech that falls outside either of these limits will be disqualified.
Content: The speech given by each contestant must be the work of the contestant alone. No more than 75 words may be quoted.
Results of their presentation:
$100 check for winner of the contest – Peyton. He will move on the District 6670 4-Way Test Speech competition which will be held on Sunday March 22, 2015 at Wright State University.
$50 check for runner-up - Rachel
Rachel began her speech by saying There are two kinds of people, those who serve and those who watch. She said her own experiences in and out of school have shaped her belief that all high school students should be required to do service. She said they will feel accomplishment when they serve and that service is needed around the world. This meets the 4-Way test's first tenet, that asks, Is it the truth.
She said she had the opportunity to go to an orphanage in Guatemala, where she worked helping to build new chicken coops and helped with a dental cleaning program.
She was surprised to learn that the children had only been to a dentist once or twice in their life time. She said she held up flash cards telling kids how to brush their teeth. Things we take for granted they had not learned about, she said.
She also belongs to Key Club, a service club at her school. As to the 4-Way Test's question, Is it fair to all concerned? she said it is important to try to equalize things where possible and improve people's lives where you can help. Is it beneficial? She said she has developed friendships she would not have had and is a pen pal to Rosa in Guatemala.
Peyton noted that Rachel is in Speech 2 and he is in Speech 3 at Alter. He asked everyone to close their eyes and imagine they are in eighth grade and going into their freshman year with new friends and that you get a call from your mom telling you your father just had a double amputation, a heart attack, and a stroke at the same time. "That was the beginning of eighth grade," and the worst four years of his life, he said. "My father was 42 when it happened." He has since had six heart attacks, three strokes and three amputations, along with diabetes and congestive heart failure. "He is my best friend," he said. "These have been the best four years of my life."Though what happened to his father and him was not what they wanted to happen, it changed him, he said. At first he had bad grades and a bad attitude. Then his freshman year was okay and his sophomore year was alright, but by his junior year, "I was closest with my father. I am always there for him."
"People give up too easily," he said. "I hope you will never give up when you have a problem."
"Is it fair to all concerned?" he asked as the 4-Way test asks. It doesn't matter what religion you are, he said. Did he want to give up? Did I want him to give up? No, he said. Will it be of benefit to all concerned? "Sometimes No," he said. It didn't make anything better in his life. But then, "I might have given up on high school, but I didn't. No one gave up. I'm an older man now and I learned you never give up. You should never give up, and nor did I."
