Ron Hollenbeck announced materials for the newest Malawi Life Pumps will arrive there next week - 18 of the 20 wells have been drilled and are ready for installation. They will drill the rest in early March. One of the pumps we sponsored was visited recently. It has been running for 8 years, and there has been no day without water! Children 8 years and younger have been able to grow up with safe water every day of their lives. The residents are growing gardens, raising livestock, and the community is flourishing. Kim Senft-Paras provided the 50th Anniversary Tidbit on Peace and Conflict Prevention/Resolution
Our speaker today was Kelly Lehman, member of the Dayton Rotary Club and chair of the District 6670 Peace Committee.
Kim Senft-Paras introduced Kelly Lehman, who has been a member of the Dayton Rotary Club since 2005. She is involved in the Rotary District Peace committee and the first Peace Day for youth. Kelly earned degrees in Business at Sinclair Community College, Human Services Administration and Management at Antioch University. She is the creator of Global Love Dayton,
https://www.globallovedayton.com/ and is a Trustee for Preservation Dayton and involved with the International Peace Museum.
Kelly noted Sue Taylor is co-chair Youth Peace Conference with her. Last March, Kelly found extra time on her hands, so she looked online to learn what Rotary has available for free trainings.
She stumbled upon
rotarypositivepeace.org which is a free online academy. She discovered the 8 pillars of positive peace, which emphasize proactively building peace in a community.
DG Carol Hughes wanted to do a conference, to help explain this concept to students. Kelly agreed to help and recruited six local professors to help. April 23 is the date for the district’s first Peace Advocacy, Leadership and Service Day. They first thought to involve RYLA students, but the rescheduled event last year had limited participation. She spoke to 37 students who attended RYLA last fall and hopes they will take leadership roles in the new conference.
The Dayton Rotary Peace Committee chaired by Carolyn Rice, was looking for and activity that all Rotarians could be involved in, so the conference became District wide.
As Kelly was trying to find a way for more interaction between Rotarians and students, she received an email from NextGen Peace Builders in Charlotte, NC.
RI Peter Kyle helped raise $500,000 to do a peace project for students in 9 eastern states and developed an online program. Kelly asked that Ohio be involved, too.
On September 21 the online curriculum was launched on The International Day of Peace. Over 6,000 students in US and Caribbean are now working on this project.
Dayton Regional STEM School jumped onboard and have 25 students doing the online curriculum while receiving community service hours for participating. Ten Rotarians are involved, and they all meet one day a week on zoom for a 1-hour conversation on peace.
On April 23 those 25 students will attend the conference but there is room for 100 students so we can help recruit more students.
Once the students complete the online course, they will receive s peace builders certification.
Peace Advocacy, Leadership and Service Day - April 23, 2022; 8:30 am - 5:30 pm at the Dayton International Peace Museum
Morning will include an educational program with service projects in the afternoon.
- Peace Museum at new space Courthouse Square
- Femme Collaborative to raise awareness of need for women’t hygiene products
Kelly said they need Peace Activators (adult) to work with the students. Students access the class for free because District 6670 purchased the program for $3,000.
Ways to get involved include:
- Attend Peace Day April 23
- Join planning team for next year
- Help get organizations interested in talking about this
- Make the committee more of a district committee
The district also has a Peace Fellow Subcommittee that needs more members. They review applications for Rotary Peace Academy.
Sue also said if interested in doing a project around peace, consider applying for a district grant this year.
Kim noted it would be good to share with our Interact students at Centerville High School.
Kelly will share info and postcard that we can share with others. She needs help getting students from other districts, too.
