Centerville Rotary Club Meeting Oct. 31, 2019

Official Greeters for the week:

10/31/2019 Kisha Taylor and Doug Bockrath
11/07/2019 Matt Kuhn and Tom Broadwell
11/14/2019 Jim Harris and John Callander
11/21/2019 Carol Kennard and Dave Trout

Doug Bockrath was our official greeter this day. We had a full house in the Academy Room.

There were a number of returnees at this meeting. Joyce Young came in smiling and
President-Elect Frank Perez was as glad to see her as the rest of us. Today being Halloween, she had on a fancy scarf to mark the occasion.

Don Gerhardt was also back, with his great smile and a thumbs up.

Here's Don again with Jim Harris and John Callander.
And Sally Beals was back, doing what I'm sure her husband John would have wanted. Ann Blackburn and she sat together. Everyone is still trying to get over the sudden death of John Beals Monday, Oct. 21 from a heart attack. He was 83 and died during a volunteer golf outing at Yankee Trace. He had appeared healthy and vibrant at the previous Rotary Club meeting the Thursday before, and had delivered dictionaries to third graders at Incarnation School.
He was a past president of Centerville Rotary and a PDG for District 6670. A true leader.

The city of Centerville put up four banners at the center of town in tribute to Centerville Councilman John Beals, one on each corner at Franklin and Main St. His wife Sally is a past mayor of Centerville.

.

This is a potential new member, who heard about the club and came to see what it is all about. Mario Contreras looks like a good candidate for membership. This is his second
time at the club, so things are looking good.

Jack Durnbaugh brought along his wife Allison Durnbaugh as a guest.

Here's Doug greeting our Pancake Breakfast hero Adam Manning.

Brad Huffman brought along a guest, D Steward, who claimed not to be an OSU fan but a Bears man all the way. He got a few boos...well maybe more than just a few...but maybe he will come back anyway.

If you look, you can see Tom Groszko and his wife standing in this picture. She's tall like him. They're talking to Vice President Briain Hayes.

Dale Berry is sitting with Judy Budi and Matt Kuhn

And look who came as a guest but is leaving as our newest club member: Elda Gotos Gay. Congrats to her. The yellow ribbon for new members is now a red ribbon. You'll see how touched she was to join our club. Oh, boy, are we lucky.

PDG Harvey Smith and Elda's sponsor Jen Gibbs are there to present her with her Rotary pin and new member red ribbon.
She was given a short time to say something about herself. She said she moved to this
country from Puerto Rico 10 years ago, first moving to North Carolina and Virginia before
coming to Ohio. She has four granddaughters. Last year she came to the Pancake Breakfast
and liked the camaraderie. "Im glad to be with you," she said. "i feel like I'm at home."  When
PDG Harvey Smith welcomed her into the club, he kept it short: "You're in," he said.

This is Miranda Hawk, wife of our speaker, Ryan Hawk.

The Centerville Rotary Club met at Yankee Trace at noon for the weekly meeting. President Chuck King led the Pledge of Allegiance; PDG Harvey Smith gave the prayer, and the singing of God Bless America was led by Brad Thorp. Harvey mentioned that Ray Merz had stents put in and that we should keep him in our prayers.

Announcements:

President King thanked our greeter.

He had Joyce Young talk about the two-for one Paul Harris donations. Joyce said this is a good deal, as by paying $500, the club will put in the other $500 for the $1,000 Paul Harris donation. The money needs to be in before the middle of the month so that the Paul Harris award can be made at the Christmas dinner, which will be Dec. 12 with the Centerville Jazz ensemble entertaining.
Members received envelops with the details of the program. Nov. 15 is the deadline for getting your money in.
After Elda Gotos Gay was inducted into the club, President King commented on the nice service held at Epiphany Lutheran Church for John Beals. He said an e-mail went out on memorial donations for: Centerville Washington Foundation, Centerville Rotary, and Epiphany Lutheran Church.

He thanked everyone for their efforts for the Pancake Breakfast and the team effort Adam Manning and the Pancake Committee for organizing and implementing everything.
He noted that it is time for picking the Rotarian of the Year and nomination sheets were distributed on the tables, describing the parameters of the things being looked for. You need to provide reasons for the selection.
He said the Happy Dollars last week for the Polio Foundation amounted to $278.
Some club badges have been renumbered, so check when looking for yours.

And here's Brian.

Gerry gave $5, being happy about the Pancake 'Breakfast success, and her 40th anniversary.
Arnie said he was Happy and Jack Durnbaugh said he would be happy for if they win their next game they would be in the play-offs...They play Springboro, he said.
Carol Kennard was happy as she had no walking cast on her foot and had learned her foot was not broken but that she only had a sprain. A second x-ray showed that, she said.
Lee Hieronymus gave $20 for the Interact Club at Centerville High School helping out at the Pancake Breakfast fund-raiser. "We could not done as well without them volunteering and helping out," he said. He said they wished we had more Pancake Breakfasts, and everyone had a big laugh for all the work it takes to have just one great big successful one...with 950 some attendees.
President-Elect Frank Perez gave, saying people had been asking who was bringing Don Gerhardt to our Rotary meetings since his stroke, noting that he, Frank, is his driver. Thanks Frank...Real leadership and helping out all around.
Judy Budi gave for having a happy time in San Diego.
Then there was that "Bear" fan fellow, D Steward, who claimed not to be a Buckeye fan.
Matt Kuhn gave for being back and Don Stewart gave for having had fun going and giving dictionaries to one of the third grade classes.
Kitty gave $5 for Sally Beals being back and $5 for her Nov. 1 birthday coming up Friday. And Irene Ullmer was happy to be with the club and Crissy said she was "A proud Buckeye Fan." Yeah, Crissy.
Adam Manning said something about a third nephew.

Speaker of the Week: Ryan Hawk, Learning Leader Show/ Internet podcasts
Ryan is the older brother of A.J.Hawk, a star at O.S.U. and decorated NFL linebacker.
Ryan said his podcast is considered to be one of the five top podcasts, listened to by millions
of people in 156 countries worldwide. He also is a motivational speaker, and works with small groups that meet online to talk about leadership. He said he was fortunate to have been born a white dude and had the opportunity to make the most of life. He was born in Milford, Ohio, he said.
Luck played a large part in his success as well as what he learned from various mentors along the way. His podcasts feature successful world class leaders, from business to coaches and past mentors.
He said he would use his own life story as an example of how he learned to be a leader. He said that at age 12 he already knew he wanted to be a quarterback. You have to learn to make the most of your opportunities. He said he was lucky to have parents who recognized his sons had athletic ability and moved to Centerville where they could be quarterbacks at Centerville High School. He said his mentors were football coaches Bob Gregg and Ron Ullery. They helped him learn about preparing for hard work and consistency, he said. He learned to prepare for things and be ready when opportunities knocked. "I got lucky," he said. Then he went to Miami University in Oxford, where he found he would have to compete with two-time Superbowl Champion Ben Roethlisberger to be the starting quarterback. After two years, he transferred to Ohio University, where he captained the football team as its quarterback for two seasons. He had been CHS quarterback from 1996-1999. He went to the Athena league in the south for a few years and then, when he realized his career as a quarterback would not take him further, he took a sales job at Lexis-Nexis. He said he made 80 cold calls a day, but moved up to become vice president of North American sales for its partner company Elsevier, until partnering with a local firm, Brixey and Meyer to concentrate full time on his podcast, speaking engagements and leadership circles. He said he learned how to be a professional and to be ready to respond to opportunities.
On a trip out to Lake Tahoe, he said he took an exit row seat and quickly made a friendship with the person sitting next to him. They had four hours of an incredible conversation, he said. He ended up flying down to Florida to talk with Todd Wagner, who had partnered with Mark Cuban to form Broadcast.com, the first to stream live sporting events. They sold to Yahoo for $5.7 billion. He was asked about his thirst and passion for more knowledge and was asked how he thought about having other people learn along with him as a podcaster. That was about five years ago, he said. He learned to make the most of his luck he said, and its been 335 episodes since then. He worked with Doug Myer, a co-founder of Bixey and Myer, and expanded his podcasts. As of next month its been two years since he left Corporate America, he said. "I don't waste those opportunities," he said. He said he reads books and prepares 10 to 15 hours for interviews. There are times when people don't show up, but he has episodes in a bank good for two months, he said.

The Rotary meeting was adjourned with the reciting of the Four-Way Test
