Centerville Rotary Meeting Highlights
Rotary Monthly Theme:
VOCATIONAL SERVICE

President Brian Hayes welcomed everyone in person and on Zoom to the Centerville Rotary Club and led the group in the Pledge of Allegiance. PDG Harvey Smith gave an update on Don Gerhardt, who would love to come back to a meeting, although he is not able to yet. Harvey then provided the prayer.

The thought of the moment was from jazz musician, Duke Ellington, who once said, “If it sounds good and feels good, then it is good!”

Chuck King noted he has been in contact with the Dayton Rotary  Club who is sponsoring an Ecuador water project - piping water from mountains down to the town. Our club contributed $1,000 which will be matched with a district grant.

Ron Hollenbeck recognized Club members who completed the requirements to achieve the 125 pin - donate $100 to the Annual Fund and $25 to Polio Plus this year. The following Rotarians received the 125 pin:
Sofie Ameloot
Uriah Anderson
Judy Budi
Elda Gotos
Jim Harris
Brian Hayes
Dick Hoback
Ron Hollenbeck
Carol Kennard
Chuck King
Matt Kuhn
Bill Menker
Boyd Preston
Kim Senft-Paras
Harvey Smith
Brad Thorp

Ron also said he is working on the awards for Paul Harris Fellow and is shooting for the February 10 meeting for recognition.

Carol Kennard announced the Diversity Council has decided to postpone the MLK Breakfast in the interest of public health. It will be rescheduled later in the year.

Bill Menker gave us the 50th Anniversary trivia, again talking about classifications since librarians like to classify things! In 1982, Rotary had a list of 108 classifications and asked clubs to compare the list with your club’s representation. They then asked members to find new members to fill open classifications. Our club covered 52 classifications in 1982.

Bill found an interesting classification - Dairy Products Retailing aka milkman, but we did not have one!

Lee Hieronymus said there was some flexibility - if you had 2 people that were elevator operators, you could make one elevator operator up and the other elevator operator down.

President Brian then presented a check to Susan Bettinger of Blue Star Mothers  of collected happy bucks totaling $1,822. Susan said the money will go for deployments - 40 packages go out every Saturday. They did over 600 stockings this Christmas, and also support the Dayton VA food pantries and homeless veterans. Package includes snacks, toiletries, personal items, and even dog treats.

This quarter we are collecting  Recovery Bucks to help relief efforts in Kentucky where they had devastation from tornadoes.

Sergeant of Arms this week was Pat Beckel.
Happy Bucks given today:
  • Pat Beckel was so grateful to have friends, Rotarians, and family, and to have first world problems
  • Mark Febus for the new year
  • Lee Hieronymus was glad he knows Harvey Smith
  • Mike Norton-Smith for his son who turned four last week
  • Robert Ford was happy to be here, and felt truly blessed
  • Harvey Smith was happy he knows Lee Hieronymus
  • Ron Hollenbeck was happy to know Lee and Harvey and also Pat
  • Gerry Eastabrooks said it was weird to see Lee with facial hair
  • Boyd Preston was amazed at all the liars in Rotary :-) and happy Lee has one friend
  • Bill Menker was happy and healthy and mentioned the library won’t have Covid tests until late Jan/early Feb. Pat mentioned he is collecting them at his office for anyone with an emergency need
  • Tom Broadwell was happy to be around Rotarians
  • Dick found a medication that takes care of his sciatic pain but makes him dizzy, however he has no pain when he falls thanks to the medication!
  • Dale Berry said he got a notice that he hasn’t paid his bill, but said he hasn’t been getting emails from ClubRunner either. We’ll check into it!
  • Uriah Anderson was happy he hasn’t needed a covid test
  • Jim Harris enjoys learning club history from Bill
  • Chuck King was happy to be here and said Bill’s doing a great job with Rotary history tidbits
  • Arnie Biondo said his son has recovered from 3rd bout of covid
  • Mark Balsan was happy
  • Larry Marchand was happy to support the cause; his in-laws live within miles of the devastation in KY and folks really need money to help rebuild
  • Carol Kennard was happy her granddaughter Kaycee is recovering quickly from Covid and told of a first in nature watching a Snowy owl express an owl pellet - and she caught it with her camera!
  • Don Stewart said despite the owl pellet story, our lunches have been really good

Pat encouraged everyone to be that joy in somebody’s life. Be the one that makes somebody’s day.

Our speaker today was Troy Dillabaugh, Agency Owner of the Dillabaugh Benefits Group of Allstate Insurance.

Robert Ford introduced our speaker, Troy Dillabaugh, who is a benefits specialist in Dayton area, coordinating insurance benefit packages with supplemental packages.

Troy said he is glad everyone is healthy and distributed packets of information. Since 1999, he has been working with businesses to help them offer additional insurance that is affordable for employees. Allstate has policies available that are provided without any medical questions.

The additional policies are at no cost to the employer and can save them money. Small Market Solutions is a unique product portfolio that offers small businesses a menu of group voluntary benefits to fit their unique needs. It offers:
Accident Insurance
Critical Illness Insurance
Disability insurance
Hospital indemnity insurance
Life insurance

Troy said over 50% employees don’t have at least $1,000 in savings, and most business have $3,500-5,000 deductibles, so many employees don’t have funds to satisfy their deductible.

Offering voluntary benefits is a great way to get high ratings, and benefits that employees find attractive and THEY pay for. Can help keep health insurance costs down.

Troy said you can reach out to him, Robert or Crissy to schedule an appointment to discuss options.

President Brian noted next week our speakers will be the students who attended RYLA.
He led the group in reciting the 4-Way Test and wished all a great week.
