Our speaker today was Judge Chris Epley, an Ohio Appellate Court Judge.

Judge Chris Epley has been an Appellate Court judge since 1999. He graduated from Oakwood Hight School, Denison University, and the University of Dayton. He’s been a member of the Oakwood Rotary Club since 2012 and is a past president and PHF.

Judge Epley announced Monday, May 1 is Law Day, first designated by President Eisenhower. It provides an opportunity to learn more about the law.

He also announced the Oakwood Rotary Club Golf Outing is May 22 and invited all to participate!

The Ohio Appellate Court judges deal only with Ohio laws, not Federal laws. There are 870 magistrates in the state of Ohio who serve 6 counties: Champaign, Clark, Darke, Greene, Miami, and Montgomery. The Districts are based on population.

Our district has a 5 Judge panel, but only 3 are on the bench each week. They follow the Rules of Court.

Judge Epley rides his bike to work each day, a 4-mile commute.

A few notes about our District Appellate Court
  • Judges can serve only to age 70.
  • He hires 2 staff attorneys and 1 admin person, who do a lot of the work
  • Court administrator has been there 25 years
  • Located on the 5th floor of the court house, based in Dayton
  • Humility is important - elected to do a job and that’s what they do.
  • Only lawyers appear in front of them, no jury, and they present a 15 minute argument since they already filed a brief.
  • The job is mostly reading and writing.
  • Decision made is to either uphold or reverse a lower court decision based on identifying things the trial judge made a mistake on.

Judge Epley has a pen color system:

Next week our program with be the Golf Committee. Come prepared to help stuff goodie bags and organize supplies for our fundraiser!
