Centerville Rotary Club Meeting Aug. 8, 2019

Official Greeters for the week:

08/08/2019 Sofie Ameloot and Brian Hayes, Jeff Senney, etc.
08/15/2019 David Herman and Deb Dulaney
08/22/2019  This is an evening dinner meeting to thank Sponsors of the Pancake Breakfast. Time is 6 to 8 p.m. Spouses welcome.
Greeters: Wayne Davis and Kim Senft-Paras

Our official greeters were Sofie Ameloot (R), with Vice President Brian Hayes, and crew.
Here they are seen greeting Carol Kennard, who will be new granddaughter sitting
for several weeks.

Should we call this "the motley crew"?  President Chuck King is hobnobbing with John
Callander, Past President Boyd Preston, and President-Elect Frank Perez.

One of our special guests this day promises to make some return visits. It's none other than
Laramie Jung, Assistant Governor for District 6670. She's a native Daytonian and hangs out
with the West Chester/Liberty Rotary when not with us.

Harvey Smith drove in with the top down on his vintage (historic) white Mercedes this day, which had a storm or two predicted for later. He has a jaunty walk and a jaunty car that a number of our members admired as he drove away at the end of the meeting.

Attorney Jeff Senney arrives earlier than usual.

Inside the light's a bit better and look who's here after not being here for a while...Ann
Blackburn, who has recruited many members for the club. She knows a bit about banking
too.

Jen Gibbs was one of the greeters at the Dayton airport for our new exchange student, Yok,
who arrived from Thailand Sunday evening. She will also serve as an advisor for
our 15-year-old exchange student who made the 20-hour trip alone on the airplane.

Here are the arrival pictures. You see Ram Nunna and his daughter Nithya (L) with Yok, the
nickname of Jareonrat Chinpathirunkul, from Thailand. In the picture on the right you see
Harvey Smith, Yok with flowers and butterfly balloon, with Jen Gibbs, Chuck King and Brad
Huffman. Welcome Yok!...

Busy Judy Budi arrives in style despite her busy CEO schedule.

Greeter, greeter, who's behind the big hug from Jeff Senney?

Could it be Kisha Taylor? The odds are right if you guessed correctly.

Sury Peddireddi is the man stepping quickly by in this pic.

And she arrives in style. Yok, better known at home as Jareonrat Chinpathirunkul. What
a surprise for our Rotary that she should be at our meeting right after she arrived. School
starts next week and she must be whirling from all the new things surrounding her. We
hope she meets great friends at CHS and finds our community a fun place to be. We
welcome you and hope to learn more about you and your country at some later meetings.

Yok's first host family will be member Ram Nunna's family. Ram's daughter Nithy (R) came along today, her first visit to Rotary. Yok is at left, with some Rotary pins on her jacket.

Our Assistant District Governor meets Nithy and tells her about the Interact Club and Rotaract.

Brad Huffman brings along his "twin." He says people say his son Braden looks like him.
You decide. Braden is in the fifth grade and has helped with the Pancake Breakfast and other
Rotary projects. Thanks Braden. You've got a great start in the world.

See Katie Neubert back there? She's been missing in action for a while. Welcome back.

Roast beef sandwiches and French fries and cookies filled the plates this day, along with
some slaw.

The Centerville Rotary Club met at Yankee Trace at noon for the weekly meeting. President Chuck King led the Pledge of Allegiance; Brian Hayes gave the prayer, asking for those recovering from the mass shooting Sunday in the Oregon District of Dayton, to have strength and help in their time of need. Nine people died, but the police's quick action in a minutes's time killed the killer, a 24-year-old Bellbrook man who killed his sister along with eight others, injuring 27 others. He had 250 rounds of ammo that he could have used had the five police officers not arrived when they did and shot him.
The singing of God Bless America was good.

Menu this week: Roast beef sandwich, French fries, Yankee Trace coleslaw and cookies.
Menu next week: Not on the regular schedule...your guess is as good as
mine...we originally were going to have a supper this day.

Guests this week: Our exchange student from Thailand, Jareonrat Chinpathirunkul, otherwise known as Yok; Braden Huffman; Nithya Nunna.

President Chuck King presided over the meeting.
Here is his official photo from last week.
Announcements:

President Chuck King thanked our greeters, Sofie Ameloot, Brian Hayes, and others.

President King said Don Gerhardt is attempting to get his strength back again so he can go back home from rehab and would still welcome any visitors to help cheer him up. He visited Don  Saturday and Don's wife came later to take him to Bob Evans for dinner, so he could get out of the rehab center for a while.

Jenn Gibbs said the Boomer Fest at St. Leonard on Aug. 10 will have an entrance off Clyo Road. Volunteers are needed to help with handicapped parking and to man a booth for Rotary. Volunteers were asked to sign up while at Rotary. Volunteers will get a Boomer Fest T-shirt and lunch, she said.

Tom Groszko paid $30 for each of the two tickets to the Great American Beer Festival that Chuck said he got free, but were worth $30 apiece or $40 at the door...to be held at Fifth Third Field. The festival is Aug. 17, a Saturday, from 2 to 4 p.m. You get 20 samples of beer.
Ron Hollenbeck said he has yet to hear from the Chicago committee that approves the Rotary International grants, but he is still hopeful we may get it to put water pumps in Haiti.
The other clubs involved are all waiting patiently and have still pledged their participating amounts, Ron said.

August 22 will be the Sponsor Thanks dinner at Yankee Trace from 6 to 8 p.m. Sign-up sheets were on the tables to see how many members plan to attend. Spouses are welcome. Letters were being sent today to the sponsors. The program is to thank them and let them know more about what their sponsorship means and where the money goes.

President King said Sofie Ameloot will officially become a U.S. citizen Aug. 15, at 12:30
p.m., downtown...conflicting with our meeting time, though some may want to attend the ceremony if they can. We will all be there in spirit...

President King said on Sept. 12 we will have a visit from District 6670 Governor Sigrid Solomon.
Sofie Ameloot talked about several service days coming up in mid September.

It was noted that thus far the club has just enough money for 71 coats, hoping to get $7,500 in total for buying coats. President King said the club has also requested a Rotary grant of $2,700 for Operation Warm. During today's Happy Bucks, Ram Nunna gave for 10 coats, bringing the number up faster than usual.

Happy Bucks this week were collected by Sgt.-at-Arms Erich Eggers and
Ann Blackburn

HAPPY BUCKS go this quarter to Operation Warm, which provides new coats to area needy kids. Hannah's Treasure Chest works with us to provide the names and sizes for the coats needed as gathered from area social agencies.

Challenge Alert: From Erich Eggers: I wanted to give an update on Project Warm.  We collected $505.00 on Thursday which is good progress toward our goal but we are running behind.  One of our members approached me after the meeting and offered a challenge to our Club.  He is willing to match up to a $1000.00 of our happy bucks next week.  Lets see if we can get a $1000.00 in happy bucks next we so we can add a total of $2000.00 to Project Warm. How's that for a great challenge!

Erich confessed that he neglected to let anyone know he would not be at last week's meeting, so he gave $20 for a coat to start the Happy Bucks. Ron Hollenbeck gave for "almost a coat" noting that ReBuilding Dayton has a project scheduled for Sept. 21, with about a half dozen people showing an interest in participating thus far.
Sofie Ameloot gave for her daughter coming back from Europe after two months there, but then said something about her leaving for college...
Boyd, Frank, and Jeff gave, with Jeff talking about his grandchildren and Don Stewart gave, noting that on a vacation in the Toledo/Maumee area with in-laws they saw how bad Lake Erie is with all the algae, etc.
Katie Neubert mentioned a SICSA event Sept. 13th, and Sally gave and Judy gave for all the guests, and Matt Kuhn gave noting he would be leaving for a couple weeks in Los Angeles. Harvey Smith gave for our new exchange student. John gave and Jen gave $2, noting her son is back for his third year in college, so her purse is bare...or almost there...And someone gave $5 for Operation Warm, and Kisha gave for being Happy and Carol Kennard was happy to be going to Philadelphia to help her daughter with her new grandbaby for two weeks. John Beals gave for Sofie becoming an American Citizen next week, and thus able to pay taxes...though she said she already does that. Sury gave for the daughters at the meeting and Ram of course gave for 10 coats, as mentioned above, and Arnie gave for a coat and Brad and Tom Groszko gave for his oldest daughter getting a job as a swim instructor at the Dayton Aquatic Center.
And then Brian and Wayne Davis each gave and Ann Blackburn got to honk the horn on the side of the tin cup used to collect the Happy Bucks. She had always wanted to do that, she said. Gerry Eastabrooks usually does not use the horn, but then Ann is Ann, right? Anything to bring a laugh.,clap, clap, clap...
Our Assistant District Governor said this is her second go-round at being a district governor, though the last time it did not include Centerville.

Speaker of the Week: There was no speaker as this was the Club Assembly meeting.
The Club Assembly part begins here.

President Chuck King said Gerry Eastabrooks our treasurer was not at the meeting but that the budget was approved and the scholarship funds had been sent out. He said Judy Budi would be contacting the recipients to see how they are doing at college.
He said as far as the goals go, we are meeting most of them. One of the goals is to recruit more members, especially younger members. We now have 72, but we hope to get up to 75, he said.
We also need to work on Interact club member retention.
Harvey said that November is Rotary Foundation Month and that he and Joyce Young are working on getting members contacted and will be sending out notifications.
He said the pancake breakfast tickets are in and he will need help next Thursday stuffing envelopes with the tickets for members to sell.
Next Thursday the Pancake Breakfast Committee meets again and more volunteers for the committee are needed.
One half of our revenue comes from sponsors.
Mark Febus was not able to be at the meeting, but he said that the Interact Club's advisor at CHS will be off until October for maternity leave and that a substitute person will help out until then.

It was noted that Sept. 16th would be the next social outing at St. Leonard.
Beverly Horstman of Better Angels will be our next speaker.
President Chuck King said he would first look at the goals for the club.
He showed the following three pictures showing where we are now and the goals.

Second slide

Third slide:

At the end of the meeting, a few people stopped to chat a bit and catch up on what they've missed. John Beals and Wayne Davis probably have city business to discuss.

Katie Neubert and Don Stewart probably are talking about dogs...or...?

The Rotary meeting was adjourned with the reciting of the Four-Way Test
