Club President Vas Appalaneni opened the Centerville Rotary Club Assembly meeting at Benham's Grove by leading the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag. Ray Merz led the prayer and Peachy Metzner led the singing of God Bless America.
The group met on the house's patio area, eating box lunches from Dorothy Lane Market, with its Killer Brownie and ham, turkey, or roast beef sandwich, a side cup of cold salad and chips. Cola and water were the drinks of the day. A slight pleasant breeze kept the group cool in the shaded patio despite the 87 degree temperature and the heavy clouds hanging overhead at the outset of the meeting. No rain came down.
The guests at the meeting included: Vineela Appalaneni, daughter of outgoing club president Vas; Walter Senney, father of member Jeff Senney; and Isaac and Chris Thorp. Isaac is the son of incoming club president Brad Thorp.
ANNOUNCEMENTS:
Club member Boyd Preston collected program surveys filled out by club members and requested that any not turned in yet be brought to the next club meeting at the latest.
Club President Vas asked PDG Harvey Smith to present Peachy (Mark) Metzner with another Paul Harris Fellow for his additional $1,000 donation to the Paul Harris Foundation.
Club president Vas presented club member Robert (Bob) Fry with the club's Rotarian of the Year Award, voted on by club members. The club gave Bob a standing ovation for his service to the club and outstanding work over the years as club treasurer.
Vas thanked the outgoing club officers: Bill Abrams, Brad Thorp, Ron Hollenbeck, Mark Balsan, Peachy Metzner, Bob Fry, Judy Budi, Carol Kennard, Kim Senft-Paras, and Ann Blackburn, handing them envelopes with tokens of appreciation.
Harvey turned over the presidential gavel to Brad Thorp and then called up the officers and board to induct them into office. Bill Abrams will continue in his role as the club's Rotary Foundation chaimanr; Ron Hollenbeck will be president-elect; Gerry Eastabrooks will be club treasurer; Mark Metzner will be club vice president; Mark Balsan will continue as club secretary; Kim Senft-Paras will be in charge of youth services again; Carol Kennard will continue as head of club affairs; Ray Merz will be in charge of International Services; Boyd Preston will be in charge of community services; and Vas will now be past president; with Judy Budi in charge of membership, a role held during the past two years by member Dan Johnson. Johnson noted that nine new members have been brought into the club through the help of various initiatives over the past two years, bringing our membership to 60 at the present time. Included in his list were fireside chats, new member orientation, the Rotary Cocktail Club, club mentors, etc. He said there will be a new yellow ribbon initiative coming up.
One of the new changes to this new year's program was instituted at the meeting. A table was set for those who have a birthday in June. Five members got to sit at the special table: Rick Terhune, Bob Fry, Don Gerhardt, Carol Kennard, and Matt Kuhn, who came in late and thus sat at another table. The group got a special dessert, scrumptious-looking cupcakes prepared by Kim Senft-Paras, along with lunch. The group birthday table will continue on the third Thursday of each month. Everyone sang happy birthday to the June Rotarians.
Our newly inducted president Brad Thorp presented our outgoing president Vas with a plaque similar to the one presented to Bob Fry, for Vas's service to the club as president. He noted that the club was formed on June 13, 1972 with Don Overly as the first president, and members Jack Workman, Harvey Smith, and Lee Hieronymus as members. The oldest members were 37 years old and the youngest, Lee was 26. he said. Brad talked of the service trips the club has made to Peru, Honduras, Indonesia and South Africa, among others and said the club has also made a huge impact on individual Rotarians. He said that 13 years ago he had just moved to the community when he joined Rotary to get to know others in the community and serve the community as best he could.
He said he did not realize at first the impact friendships in Rotary would have.
He said he was fortunate to have known a list of members now deceased that included Don Sortman, Jacque Sheley, Dave Dawson, Don Cetrone, Jim Landesiedel, Hans Berkel, Bob Corbin and others.
He said he does not see a need for huge improvements in the club but would like to see if members can still do a bit more at times. He apologized in advance for any mistakes he might make as president and said he hopes to do his best in working with the group to provide service above self.
He rang the bell to close the meeting.
Club member Boyd Preston said the incoming board members decided at their recent Monday meeting that they would like to get more input from members on what projects they think the club should continue and any new projects that might be added. Projects that can be done in the Spring and early summer would fit into the club schedule easily, he said. He passed out a survey at today's meeting that should be brought back to the June 18th Assembly meeting at Benham's Grove. The club needs to know what service projects club members really want to work on. The current six projects are to be evaluated by the members and suggestions for new projects would be appreciated, he said. Carol Kennard also e-mailed members information to send in the survey via computer.
