PDG Harvey Smith presented Don Stewart with his Paul Harris plus 6. Thank you for your generous support of the Rotary Foundation!

Treasurer, Gerry Eastabrooks and President Chuck celebrate receiving a $2,500 check from Rotary District 6670 grant program for our dictionary/thesaurus program.

President Chuck presented Sofie Ameloot with a Rotary pin and congratulated her for becoming a U.S. Citizen on August 15.

He then surprised Sofie with an American flag that was flown over the U.S. Capitol on that day in her honor!

Our speaker today was an educator and author, Randy Overbeck who shared information on the ghost research he did in preparation for his books, Leave No Child Behind, and Blood on the Chesapeake.

Centerville Rotary Club Meeting Aug.29, 2019

Official Greeters for the week:

08/29/2019 Arnie Biondo and others
09/05/2019 Jack Durnbaugh and Bob Fry
09/12/2019 Erich Eggers and Ann Blackburn
09/19/2019 Brad Huffman and Ram Nunna
09/26/ 2019 Mike Wier and Robert Ford

Our official greeters were Arnie Biondo with help from Jack Durnbaugh, Jim Briggs, and others. Here you see Arnie (L), who had two official roles this day, one as greeter and one with the Pancake Breakfast Committee, and Jack Durnbaugh on right. Jack is scheduled to be an official greeter at next week's meeting. A busy time for Jack, as school has just started and he is a principal at CHS.

Jack's second badge is for his wife, who is running for the Centerville School Board.

Not far behind is ever-faithful Jim Briggs, who never fails to greet all he sees.

Here's the Pancake Breakfast committee, minus Arnie, who was at the door by this time.

Member Jeff Senney keeps bringing new young faces to see what Rotary is all about. His guest this day is Jana Ramos-Ratliff, a retiree benefit advisor, an affiliate of TLC Insurance Group and Wealth.

And here's Arnie greeting our birthday boy, PDG Harvey Smith, a retired minister who probably works harder than most non-retired ministers.

Sury always hurries in, so getting this picture wasn't easy, and as you see Ron Hollenbeck got by before the camera clicked. Jim Stuart is in the middle background, looking a lot like Adam Manning, with their dark beards.

But never fear, the camera's always near and captured Ron talking with our guest speaker Randy Overbeck, who spoke about the research he did on ghosts for several books

President King (nice to have two titles, isn't it?) and Carol Kennard talk, no doubt about the new granddaughter she went to help take care of in Pennsylvania. The Bulletin sure missed her input those two weeks.

When it came time to sing God Bless America, President King called on Arnie to start it. Arnie happened to be sitting next to Brad Thorp, seen coming in here. Brad always startis on key, so Arnie threw the start to Brad, and GBA came out perfect.

Dale Berry was back with good spirits. He's wearing red, cheerful like his smile.

Our Vice President Brian Hayes always dresses presidentially, though it almost looks like he has on multiple ties.

Talk about cream of the crop. We have so many movers and shakers...here are just three: Judy Budi, CEO at Graceworks Lutheran Services; Arnie Biondo, Centerville-Washington Park District Director; and Ray Merz, retired minister, lecturer, and all-around good guy.

The Academy Room entrance gets crowded as the meeting time nears. Here John Beals is picking up his badge as Gerry Eastabrooks, our club treasurer, arrives.

Dan Johnson just opened his own financial advisor business, after working for Merrill Lynch for seven years.

Carol Kennard is showing Jack Durnbaugh some pictures, no doubt of her new grandbaby.

Doc Hoback is shaking Harvey Smith's hand, no doubt congratulating him on his birthday. Jim Harris is on the right.

Another man in red, Mike Wier, our outstanding tuba player. Sally Beals, our past city mayor, farm owner, and presidential home expert, having traveled to see most, is on left.

Erich Eggers arrives just before Dave Trout. He thanked Brian Hayes for filling in when he was gone.

Dave Trout spends a lot of time in Colorado as well as Ohio.

The guys in black are bringing in the food this day. Chicken sandwiches with fruit and pasta.

Matt Kuhn seems to divide his time between Ohio and the west coast, for business reasons.

Mark Febus has kept the Interact Club at Centerville High School going.

Deb Dulaney was due for a close-up. So here she is.
The Centerville Rotary Club met at Yankee Trace at noon for the weekly meeting. President Chuck King led the Pledge of Allegiance; Ray Merz gave the prayer, and the singing of God Bless America was led by Arnie Biondo with the aid of Brad Thorp.

Menu this week: Grilled chicken sandwich, pasta salad, fruit cup
Menu next week: Grilled hamburger, green beans, Mac-N-Cheese

Guests this week: Ken Arnold, a guest of our speaker; guest speaker Randy Overbeck; and Jana Ramos-Ratliff, a guest of Jeff Senney

President Chuck King presided over the  meeting.

Announcements:

President King thanked our greeters.
He asked Ron Hollenbeck for an update on the club's request for a global grant to put 11 LifePumps in Haiti.
Ron said he has re-established contact with those in charge of the grants and that they have been working on getting all the needed information completed.
The Rebuilding Dayton service project may be changed to October 19. The group
wants to know how our members might participate and whether it might be painting, clean-up, demolition, etc.

President King said Chrissy Allums, of the Allstate Insurance Agency, has been approved for membership in the club. Remember she first came and then brought her boss, Robert Ford, to the club. He is now a member and so will she soon be. Welcome Chrissy!

Pancake Breakfast tickets are to be passed out next week, he said.
He said he received a thank you note from Building Bridges for the club's donation.
He thanked Adam Manning for catering the Aug. 22 meal from Carrabba's. He said nine people committed being sponsors for the upcoming Pancake Breakfast in October.
Then he called Don Stewart and Harvey Smith to the front of the room. Harvey presented Don with his Paul Harris Plus 6 award.

President King said Gerry got an envelop in the mail from Frank Scott notifying her that the club would be getting a $2,500 Rotary grant for Operation Warm, and $1,700 for Building Literacy, our dictionary and thesauri program.
President King said the District Trilogy will be Sept. 11, with dinner at 5:30 p.m., and the meeting at 6 p.m. at Normandy Church. Topics will include the Youth Exchange, Membership, the Foundation, etc.
He reminded everyone that Sept 19 will be our next social mixture at St. Leonard.

The next Board meeting will be at 5:30 p.m. Monday at the Park District Headquarters.

Our first service day will be Tuesday, Sept.17 with BOGG.
On Saturday, Sept. 21 the service day will be at the House of Bread.

Sofie Ameloot became new U.S. Citizen at 2 p.m. August 15 at the Courthouse in downtown Dayton. President King said he had the U.S. flag fly over the U.S. Capitol on that day. She was presented with that flag and a certificate to prove that it was flown in her honor that day.

And here's what President King was fishing for in the first picture. The certificate.

President King noted at a past meeting that on Sept. 12 we will have a visit from District 6670 Governor Sigrid Solomon. He said Project Read has a new executive director, Kevin Sorice, so we will have to see what the needs are for that service project. He replaces Laura Mlazovsky.

Happy Bucks were collected by Sgt.-at-Arms Erich Eggers and Treasurer Gerry Eastabrooks

HAPPY BUCKS go this quarter to Operation Warm, which provides new coats to area needy kids. Hannah's Treasure Chest works with us to provide the names and sizes for the coats needed as gathered by local social agencies.
Erich gave, asking that members keep his father-in-law in their prayers. Ken Miller, a former club member, taught him a lot about life, he said. His health is failing now.
Gerry gave $10 for Sofie, and Sofie asked to be excused for the way she looked this day as she had been practicing for the Tour de Gem charity bike ride and didn't have time to change or mess with her hair.
Mark and Frank gave and then there was a letter from Jen Gibbs thanking the club for having 12 members help at the Boomer Fest at St. Leonard. For that she said she was paying for 12 coats.
Jeff and Jana each gave for a coat, and Jack gave, mentioning the CHS football team, as the season has arrived.
Deb came back from PA where she visited her daughter and her grandson who had a tonsillectomy.
Judy gave $8 mentioning the great meal that Adam catered on Aug.22 for our Sponsor Thank You.
Carol wasn't here for the $1,000 coat challenge, so she gave $20 for a coat for that challenge that we exceeded by about 200 dollars.
John Beals and Lee Hieronymus gave and Dick Hoback and Dale and Mike and Matt and Kisha and Brad Huffman, and Adam and Sury and Ron Hollenbeck, who mentioned an anniversary yesterday. Brad mentioned a Happy Birthday to Harvey...but the song was forgotten..
He said he traveled through Europe, going to Germany, the Netherlands, France and Switzerland. Arnie gave for half a coat, mentioning that he had been asked to give a "shakedown" of sponsors next week, to see what new ones we might add.
Don Stewart gave for a coat, noting that Greg Horn had encouraged him to get on the Centerville City Planning Commission a few years ago, and he has found that the city has lots of plans to develop and improve, as with the Cornerstone Development.
Harvey, bless his soul, gave for five coats, for his birthday.
And then Raj Grandhi gave a five coat challenge...and hands went up to meet the challenge.
It was a very good day, and if I heard right, Erich said we gathered $627 for Operation Warm!
What a group!

Speaker of the Week: Randy Overbeck, speaking on Things That Go Bump in the Night

Vice President Brian Hayes introduced our speaker. He said Randy spent three decades as a teacher, school leader, coach and yearbook advisor, principal and superintendent. His first book won the 2011 Silver Award for Thriller of the Year, from ReadersFavorite.com

Randy said he is a senior Rotarian with the Xenia Rotary.

He said he did a lot of research for for his book Blood on the Chesapeake, book one of the Haunted Shore Mysteries, and wanted to let us in on what he learned about ghosts. First he asked who in the club believes in ghosts. A few hands went up. He asked if anyone had ever seen a ghost and just one hand went up.
He said in researching this question he found it was almost 50/50 in the population. He said one in five people claim to have encountered a ghost. Want to see ghosts? Just turn on your TV, he said. Lots of channels carry ghost stories. There are lots of investigation groups, such as the Baltimore Paranormal Investigations.
He said he was familiar with groups in central Indiana and Kentucky and that there is a Ghost Hunters at OSU. He said every religion in the world has a belief in ghosts. In some they were evil. Judaism has dybbuk, he said. Native Americans have skinwalkers, and Buddhists have hungry ghosts, and Hindus have ghosts from tragic deaths.
Marie Curie attended seances and Dale Earnhardt Jr. said he believed a ghost pulled him from a wreck. President Reagan said he saw a tall dark figure in the Lincoln bedroom and never went back into it, he said. Thomas Edison and Paul McCarthy said they saw ghosts, McCarthy saw the ghost of John Lennon, and Abraham Lincoln said he spoke with the ghost of his son Willie who died young.
Dorothy Walpole of the late 18th to 19th century (1786-1827) was the famous ghost of Raynham Hall. She was never ever able to leave the hall, it was said.
He showed a picture from 1939 that he said couldn't have been photo chopped, and a photo from 1954 of a church in England with a ghost.
He said in 1991 three in a team of ghost hunters went to an abandoned cemetery near Chicago, a site famous for hauntings. When they developed their pictures they found one with a young woman sitting on a bench.
Then he showed a video taken in a school in Ireland, in which the room was closed but things popped out from the walls.
He said ghosts are often thought of as being stuck between this world and the next. He said they can change the temperature of a room 20 degrees.
You need to suspend your disbelief to get into ghost stories, he said.
His first book of the Haunted Shores Mysteries was Blood on the Chesapeake. He also wrote a book called Leave No Child Behind, a thriller about the terrorist takeover of a high school and one teacher's heroic stand against the intruders. It's hard to get publishers to take new authors, he said. John Grisham had trouble at first, but now one of his first editions would be a rare prize.
He said he has to go around and push his own project to get his name and works read, but he's hoping to continue and build a readership.

The Rotary meeting was adjourned with the reciting of the Four-Way Test
