Our speaker today was retired detective, Doyle Burke.
Doyle spent 29 years with the state police, and as a detective, working over 800 homicides during his career. He is now helping out the Warren Co Coroner’s office and has a PT job with Dayton Police working on cold cases.
He wrote a book, Death as a Living, as death is what he spent his career on. Doyle noted how detectives dress (suit/tie) emotes a symbol of power.
Doyle shared the story of a 1995 homicide in the Dayton area that drew national attention and the steps they went through to solve it.
Some steps included:
Reading people when they spoke about their missing loved one on TV.
Looking close to home, as most homicides are caused by someone the victim knows
May have a feeling who did it, but have to prove it.
The body usually isn’t too far away, as the killer wants to dispose of it as quickly as possible
Brought in cadaver dog, who found the body right away
Once they have a body, the autopsy, including evaluating the stomach contents, tells a lot about when and what happened.
Interviewing people who may have seen the person helps put together a timeline of when last seen.
Can use the news to draw out guilt. They held a press conference announcing they may have found the body in Washington Park, but the killer just walked away from the conference because she knew they wouldn’t find anything there.
Interview suspects separately and they will stay in that room for hours to get them to slip up; one suspect was a convicted felon several times and eventually gave in since he didn’t want to be charged with murder, but gave up the one who had actually done it. Told the whole story. Detective then went to the guilty one and once mentioning the other had spilled the beans, she confessed.
President Manning thanked our speaker, led reciting of the Four-Way Test and wished all a good week.
