Centerville Rotary Meeting Highlights
Our Rotary theme for this month is
Rotary Foundation.

President Adam Manning welcomed everyone to the Centerville Rotary Club and led reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. Brian Hayes provided the prayer.

Today’s quote provided by Don Overly: "The most difficult thing is the decision to act;  the rest is merely tenacity."  Amelia Earhart

Today’s Announcements:
  • Thanks to today’s greeter - Dale (with help from Adam)
  • Welcome today’s guests: Matt Kuhn, former member visiting from California; Boyd’s guests: Bob Nell and Dave Williamson, both interested in joining the club; and Kristen Hutton’s youngest son, Declan.
  • President Manning said he hoped all Veterans had a good Veterans Day and noted we had a nice gathering at Brad Huffman’s house, with over 20 people attending.
  • Highway cleanup this Saturday could use more people. Let Bill Menker or Adam know if you can help.
  • January 8th meeting will now be at Yankee Trace as they will open back up for our club!
  • Lisa GM announced it’s Adopt-a-Family time. She had four spots remaining which were all filled immediately. If you didn’t sign up for a child to sponsor, you can still donate $50 Kroger gift cards, which she would like to add for each family.
  • Lisa mentioned she will start working on book distribution to 3rd graders after the holidays.
  • Ron H reminded all that it is Rotary Foundation month. Please let him know by Nov 30 if you want to participate in the club points match to get your next Paul Harris Fellow.
  • Mark K noted 20 members still owe for their Pancake ticket sales. See him for clarification as to what you still owe or if you think you paid through your dues. We are trying to wrap up the Pancake Day financial report.

Happy Bucks this quarter will be donated to Threads of Miami Valley who provides essential clothing to individuals and families in need at no cost, promoting dignity and hope.

Pat Beckel was our Sergeant at Arms with help from Brian Hayes.

Our speaker today was retired detective, Doyle Burke.

Doyle spent 29 years with the state police, and as a detective, working over 800 homicides during his career. He is now helping out the Warren Co Coroner’s office and has a PT job with Dayton Police working on cold cases.

He wrote a book, Death as a Living, as death is what he spent his career on. Doyle noted how detectives dress (suit/tie) emotes a symbol of power.

Doyle shared the story of a 1995 homicide in the Dayton area that drew national attention and the steps they went through to solve it.

Some steps included:
  • Reading people when they spoke about their missing loved one on TV.
  • Looking close to home, as most homicides are caused by someone the victim knows
  • May have a feeling who did it, but have to prove it.
  • The body usually isn’t too far away, as the killer wants to dispose of it as quickly as possible
  • Brought in cadaver dog, who found the body right away
  • Once they have a body, the autopsy, including evaluating the stomach contents, tells a lot about when and what happened.
  • Interviewing people who may have seen the person helps put together a timeline of when last seen.
  • Can use the news to draw out guilt. They held a press conference announcing they may have found the body in Washington Park, but the killer just walked away from the conference because she knew they wouldn’t find anything there.
  • Interview suspects separately and they will stay in that room for hours to get them to slip up; one suspect was a convicted felon several times and eventually gave in since he didn’t want to be charged with murder, but gave up the one who had actually done it. Told the whole story. Detective then went to the guilty one and once mentioning the other had spilled the beans, she confessed.

President Manning thanked our speaker, led reciting of the Four-Way Test and wished all a good week.
