Centerville Rotary Meeting Highlights
THANKS to Boyd Preston, this week's bulletin editor!

President Arnie Biondo welcomed everyone to the Centerville Rotary Club and lead the reciting of the Pledge. Past President Brian Hayes provided the prayer.

President Biondo had several announcements:
  • The thought of the day is from J. K. Rowling: “It is our choices that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities.”
  • Our speaker today is from the Miami Valley Peace Heroes Trail and will be introduced later
  • Guests include:
    • Cody Terrell – friend of Adam Manning. Cody is planning on applying to join our club.
    • Ron Bowerstock- his application is with the Board for approval.
  • Our greeter today was Ron Hollenbeck
  • The MLK Community Breakfast is this Monday (1/16) at Yankee Trace at 7:30 AM. Club is a sponsor and has a few tickets still available so, if interested, please contact Arnie quickly.
  • Next monthly Board meeting is also this Monday at 5:30 PM at Arnie’s home. Good chance for new members to check off an item on their to do list, if they have not attended a meeting yet.
  • Next week’s club meeting (1/19) will be a Club Assembly. We will review the past 6 months accomplishments, discuss plans for the balance of year and elect the new slate of club officers for 2023-24.

New member induction: Bob Sachs. His sponsor is Don Overly and mentor Brad Huffman.

Bob is a native Daytonian, graduate of Chaminade-Julienne High School and has an Engineering Technology degree from UD. He was a sales manager for an engineering company and then in 1975, founded his own company as a manufacturing rep for parts for the automotive industry. He is also a licensed commercial pilot and volunteers at St. Leonard’s.

Directors/ Others report to the club:
  • Sofie Ameloot- Next club social will be on Friday, January 27th. Details to follow.

Happy Bucks for this quarter go to support Florida Hurricane Relief. Pat Beckel, our esteemed Sergeant of Arms, presided with help from Brian Hayes.

Pat presented the club with a bottle of Freedom small batch straight whiskey in appreciation of our club’s gold level support for their Memorial Day Veterans event. The manufacturer is 100% veteran owned. Arnie will discuss next steps with the Board for this generous gift.

Happy Bucks were given for:
  • Pat Beckel- hoping his wife will be able to return from China where she has been visiting her parents in the next 1 ½ months. COVID restrictions have made her return challenging.

Our speaker this week was Ms. Catherine Queener from the Miami Valley Peace Heroes Trail (MVPHT).

The mission of the program, now in its 4th year, is to promote peacebuilding through the stories of peace heroes and the exploration of the ideals that guide them.
The MVPHT portrays local, national, and international peacebuilders both alive and from history. The series of inspirational signs are on the campus of the Miami Valley Unitarian Universalist Fellowship church in Centerville. They placed their first sign in December 2020 and now have 57 along the trail. It is free of charge and is open to the public during daylight hours.

Some of the heroes highlighted: Heather Cumming for her work in establishing wells in Sierra Leone and Zambia, Amaha Sellassie for helping to lead the creation of the Gem City Market, addressing a significant need in a food desert here in Dayton and Dr. John Fleming for his work in creating museums around the US highlighting the African American experience.

They maintain that a peace hero is frequently an everyday person who accepts risk and succeeds in making the world less violent and a more just place. The ideals they strive to live by:

Catherine then asked the club who our peace heroes are:
  • Uriah: his mom who is the Executive Director of Aid Africa
  • Harvey: Jesus who epitomized loving, caring, healing, and living together peacefully
  • Rand: Paul Harris- founder of Rotary and all the good being done with the Foundation, scholarships, and peace initiatives.
  • Wayne- the Centerville Police Dept for their work in making our area more just and less violent.
  • Bob Pry- Tony Hall- his work in Africa in addressing starvation
  • Arnie- Saloni Bagwani- our club’s exchange student for all the work she is doing to promote the Rotary ideals
  • Crissy- this club and its members who are truly selfless, very generous and all accepting
  • Bill M.- Dolly Parton for her work in fighting illiteracy.
  • Chuck- Design Outreach for their work in developing and installing highly reliable and capable water pumps to provide people with life changing clean water
  • Brian H- Dr. Martin Luther King- a man committed to peace and dedicated to helping those in need
  • Sivaji- Mahatma Gandhi- a true man of peace
Her final requests of the club
  • Come visit the site, especially with some children. Contact her ahead of time and she would be happy to meet you there.
  • Help her reach any teachers we might know. They are developing a booklet on this program targeting children and are looking for best ways to effectively connect with them.
