Our speaker today was Brittany Boulton, VP of Groundwork Ohio, an organization that focuses on child advocacy & engagement efforts.
Brittany shared that Groundwork Ohio is a statewide organization in its 20th year, that focuses on birth - age 5 and pregnant moms. It is a nonpartisan public policy research & advocacy program. They look for people who have young children and connect with their legislators.
90% of brain development occurs before age 5, so it is important to invest in young children’s health and well-being.
Policy Framework buckets:
Early Learning & Child care
Access to Quality Health Care
Early Childhood Trauma Prevention
Economic Stability
Their goal is to have kids healthy and ready to start school.
Policy Agenda Process:
Get feedback and then make bills to benefit children and hopefully get them passed.
For the 136th General Assembly, they are focusing on:
- Maternal & Young Child Health through three priorities to help babies make it to their first birthday.
- Early Leaning - ready for Kindergarten and support early childhood educators
HB96 state budget bill includes:
- Expanding access to publicly funded childcare for working families who are at least 200% of the Federal poverty level. Those not earning enough to pay for quality childcare.
- Bringing coalition of people together to determine what children need to reach first birthday.
- Home visiting program expanded
- Child tax credit up to $1,000/child for those earning less than $96,000/year
- Investing in Dolly Parton Imagination Library book program
