President Vas Appalaneni opened the Centerville Rotary Club meeting at The Clubhouse at Yankee Trace with the Pledge of Allegiance. Member Brad Thorp gave the prayer and Erich Eggers led the singing of God Bless America.
The guests at the meeting included Van Wert Rotarian Ned Dull and his daughter Cindy; and Beavercreek Rotarian Grant Belgard.
ANNOUNCEMENTS:
Club president Vas Appalaneni noted that a section on Honorary members was being added to the club's by-laws. Members present all voted aye on the addition, added to Article XL. Method of Electing Members, Section 1.
It notes that: "Honorary members are persons who have distinguished themselves by meritorious service in the furtherance of Rotary ideals and those persons considered friends of Rotary for their permanent support of Rotary's cause who may be elected to honorary membership. The term of honorary membership shall be for one year. Honorary members shall be exempt from the payment of dues, shall not vote and shall not be eligible to hold any office in the club. Honorary members are entitled to attend all meetings and enjoy all the other privileges of the club in which they hold such membership and are entitled to wear the emblem, badge or other insignia of Rotary as long as they hold the honorary membership in the club. Honorary membership shall automatically terminate at the end of the term for such membership as determined by the Board. The Board may extend an honorary membership, The Board may revoke an honorary membership at any time."
President Vas noted that members should think about possible projects, in addition to one being discussed for India and one for Peru, that the club might do with the $15,000 it has in the club treasury that can be used for such purposes. Club member Harvey Smith said they might consider donating some of the money to the East Dayton pantry. The club donated $1,000 in its last donation to the pantry, he said.
Club Vice President Ron Hollenbeck reported that the club's Christmas dinner will be held on Dec. 18 at Yankee Trace. It will take place of the luncheon meeting on that date, he said. It will also allow for the group Forte to serve as the evening's entertainment, he said. There will be a cash bar also. Brad and others are working on events for that evening and anyone interested in helping in that regard should let him know, Ron said.

At our meeting on August 14, we reviewed documentation, learned about our Edward Jones
account and constructed a timeline for responsibilities.
2. Interact – On Monday I met with CV High School Interact advisor Liz Cameron and the CV High
School west unit Principal Jeff Wolff. Jeff is working on a water project with a retired U.S. Air
Force engineer and Rotary clubs in Peru and Germany on a clean water project at an orphanage
just outside of Lima, Peru. The orphanage is sponsored by the German Westfalia Rotary Club.
Because clean water and international projects are the components Liz is using to differentiate
the Interact Club from the other high school service organizations, this project presents a unique
opportunity for both Interact and our club.
Ram has agreed to work with us on this project as part of our international service work. There
may also be an opportunity to resurrect our service learning projects with students as Jeff would
like to take a group to Peru in the spring to install water pipes. Also, if anyone knows college
engineering students who might be interested in this project, please let me know and I will
connect them with Jeff.
Liz plans to host the first Interact Club meeting at the high school the second week of
September. Ram, Ann Blackburn and I plan to be in attendance. I am really hoping for a great
year!
3. As part of the District conference in April 2015, I was asked to serve on the Cherry Tree Planting
project. I have met with the chair of the committee, Kent Anderson.
Member Ray Merz said the Wilmington Rotary Club had Rotarians sign up and go to their Interact Club so the two groups would get to know one another and their projects, and suggested that might work for us too.
HAPPY BUCKS:
Member Peachy Metzner said the club has raised $1,800 thus far for Operation Warm. Besides requesting a grant from the district to buy more coats, the club has also requested a grant from the Centerville-Washington Foundation, he said. "We want to reach that goal of 700 coats," he said.
Peachy also noted that he, Brad and Ron attended the Trilogy at Normandy Church and learned about attracting and retaining new members and taking new approaches to club participation, getting people more engaged in the activities of Rotary.
Ron said that the Rotary Foundation has allotted $21,000 in grant money for the district, and that grant requests amount to around $25,000. Our club has requested money for dictionaries and thesauri and for Operation Warm, he said.
Harvey said that they should know by the end of the month, who gets what.
Many of the members gave Happy Bucks at the meeting to welcome back fellow Rotarian Mike Gentile. He had been absent a considerable time due to the illness and death of his wife.
It was also noted that former Centerville Rotarian Dan Hodapp, who dropped his membership when his wife became ill and later passed away, is now living at Bethany Village. He shared with member Kitty Ullmer this week that six months ago he was diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease. He has been using a walker and was with his adult son at the time of their recent encounter, but remembers Rotary, so anyone stopping by Bethany might want to drop by and say hello, so he knows he's not forgotten.
Sgt.,-at-Arms Erich Eggers, who collected today's Happy Bucks, bought two coats for Operation Warm, and the group sang Happy Birthday to all those Rotarians with birthdays in August.
