Our speaker today was Lori Wenning, outreach coordinator for CareFlight. Jessica Oakley was also with Lori, and is also an outreach coordinator.

CareFlight opens the Americana parade with a flyover as long as no patient transport is required at that time.

CareFlight is the 65th air medical company in the country. Premier Health Miami Valley Hospital is the only Level 1 Trauma Center in the Miami Valley. They have three aircraft bases - Darke County, Urbana, and Warren County. They have a 350 mile flight radius but can fly farther if there is a special need.

They also have Mobile intensive Care Units (MICU), which are ground units that provide the same services. The helicopter flight crew includes two flight nurses who also have paramedic certification. They can take two patients in their helicopter because they have two nurses on board.

CareFlight Air and Mobile

There are two direct access rooftop helipads at Miami Valley Hospital. The helicopters fly 180 mph and can fly in certain weather conditions when others can’t depending on the pilot’s training. They do use night vision goggles when needed.

With the Dolphin aircraft, they are able to hot load - don’t have to shut down blades when loading. They are the first in the state to carry Whole Blood - 2 units. CareFlight has treated close to 80 patients on scene so far with the blood units.

During COVID, they were able to purchase some additional supplies that are still in use. The regular N95 masks didn’t fit with their head gear, so they were able to get Tiger masks, which are N95 with microphones.

CareFlight team does a lot of education:
  • Landing Zone safety lectures with fire departments, EMS.
  • Education and Outreach, medical training for EMS/Fire and hospital staff
  • CareFlight on the Lake - lake rescue training with EMS/Fire
  • Drive Smart program - mock crash with high schools usually near Prom time.

Dayton Vectren Airshow is their largest PR event. They have been the medical provider for the air show for last 41 years.

CareFlight is on Facebook, so please follow them.

They will be getting new helicopters thanks to support from the Miami Valley Hospital Foundation.

CareFlight consists of three helicopters and four ground units.
EMS/Fire can call them or physician at hospital calls for hospital to hospital transport.

There is a flat rate fee for liftoff and then per mile charge, that is covered by your insurance. If they get to the scene and are not needed, there is no charge.

Mobile Intensive Care Unit is different from a regular ambulance because of the  advance procedures they are certified to do, plus they are extra equipment and extra training.

The nurse position requires 3-5 years of critical care experience and lots of certifications and continuing education are required.

President Manning thanked Lori for the good information, led reciting of the 4-Way Test and reminded all that there will be no meeting next week as it is the 4th of July. He thanked the Club for their support during his year as president and for the Paul Harris Fellow.
