Today's speaker was Tracy Robillard, who is the owner of Midnight Bloom and Luna which is located at 116 W. Franklin Street. They provide a wide collection of plants & pottery, unique & curated home decor, and much more in-store!
Her business focuses on indoor plants and teaches people how to care for them. They also have advanced classes for those interested in air plants and tropical plants.
Tracy had several plants displayed on a table at the front of the meeting room.
Understanding each plant’s need for water, light, and pest control is essential. For example, some plants need very little water, while others, such as ferns, need much more. It is best to let a plant consume the water it has before watering again to avoid overwatering. Different plants need different care and different soil. Air plants don't need soil but do need water and light.
Tracy offered the following key information during her presentation:
- Pot size is important. When re-planting takes place, don't re-plant into a much bigger pot. Go up about an inch in diameter. Too large a pot will not allow the roots to reach the bottom of the new pot.
- If you plan on bringing an outdoor plant indoors for the winter, you should treat it with "NEEM OIL". That will kill any bug eggs that might be growing in the soil.
- Tracy has a list of “pet friendly” plants.
Their classroom is the heart of their shop, where they host events and classes for all to join. Most importantly, Tracy loves to highlight the community around them by hosting pop-up vendors, selling local goods, and even hosting a permanent 'mini store' inside our shop.
Tracy's business offers "plant bingo". It's "regular" bingo, but the winner gets a 6" plant. There's usually 30 people in attendance. It's great interacting with people you don't know. At the end of the night, everyone ends up laughing and has a great time. Participants can go to her store after regular hours and pick out a plant at a discounted price. They also hold other events like watercolor and macrame classes at her store. She really wants to offer a place where people can come and socialize.
