Today’s Announcements:
- You may have noticed flags at half mast today for National Overdose Awareness day.
- Jeff Senney announced the social at Sueno was a success with close to 40 people in attendance. Thanks to the Social Committee for organizing the event.
- Board meeting was held on Monday night. Some highlights:
- Bob Sachs resigned due to other obligations.
- Next Board meeting is September 25, 5:30 pm at Woodbourne Library.
- Several new members have turned in applications.
- Bill Menker shared he is investigating a potential Service Day opportunity - Adopt a Highway program. We would commit to two years, picking up trash 4x/year along a specific roadway. Let Bill know if you would like to participate - even if just once/year.
- Pancake committee will meet next week, 11 am at Yankee Trace. Uriah Anderson said to let him know if you want an invoice for the tickets you’re responsible for selling. Next year we will reinstate optional quarterly payments. Boyd, Harvey, and Uriah will be at the meetings each week to collect your money.
- Birthdays next week: Lisa Goris May 9/5; Chuck King 9/6. Happy birthday!
- Jackie D’Aurora is heading up the Dictionary & Thesauri program. Next week you will have the opportunity to sign up to participate in this annual project.
- Chuck King showed the sample coat he brought in so you have an idea of what the Operation Warm funds provide. Our donations go to Hannah’s Treasure Chest who then purchases and distributes the coats. We have raised $5,701 so far, and need an additional $4,000 to reach our goal.
Happy Bucks this quarter are going toward Hannah’s Treasure Chest for Operation Warm, providing winter coats to children in need. Our Sergeant at Arms today was Pat Beckel, with assistance by Brian Hayes.
Pat Beckel said he is making a donation to Sofie Ameloot & Bill Menker for the Tour de Gem and encouraged others to support them, especially since they are raising money for the Rotary International Foundation. Here are the links if you’d like to donate:

The speaker this week was Michelle Lovely, Senior Vice President, Development and Donor Services with The Dayton Foundation.
As senior vice president of Development and Donor Services, Michelle Lovely is responsible for overseeing outgoing donor grant requests, fund development and gift planning activities. Michelle introduced her guest, Nakea Lipscomb, Senior Development Director at The Dayton Foundation.
Michelle noted The Dayton Foundation (TDF) is a regional community foundation. There are other foundations under TDF’s umbrella, including the Centerville-Washington Foundation.
There are over 850 community foundations around the country.
Michelle said she deals with individuals to find ways to do their giving now or as part of an estate plan. TDF is a donor centered foundation, where the donor decides where their money goes. TDF has over 2,000 donor advised funds. TDF gave out 67 million last year with only around $3 million decided by TDF, and the rest was all donor directed.
There are over 200 nonprofit endowment funds held at TDF. They can set up free charitable checking account for a non-profit where they take care of all the back room work - tax acknowledgment letters, etc.
TDF also does initiative work like Learn to Earn, Crayons to Classrooms. tornado fund, mass shooting fund, traumatic brain injury, DEI, which all started with TDF. They gather people together to discuss issues and make plans for how to help.
TDF works with financial advisors to help with the charitable side of the business. Charitable giving can be with TDF or not.
TDF can set up one fund that benefits all of your charities, Can create a family endowment fund and TDF sends the donations you specify each year in your name. Can include restrictions you place on it. Can also ask for reporting back to ensure it meets your criteria.
In your will/trust, you name the fund and then never have to change your will. Can change your fund at any time at no cost.
When a fund reaches $250,000 or more, you can designate your money manager. Anonymous giving is possible, too, if you don’t want to get on that organization’s mailing list.
Can open a fund with TDF instead of forming a new 501(c)(3). Raise money through TDF and then have it sent to non-profit organizations for the stated purpose.
With the free charitable checking account, there is no minimum balance required. It is considered a donor advised fund. You log on to send money to charities. If it sits inactive for 2 years, they will send a letter, and eventually, if not used, would go into their community fund. This happens sometimes when the individual passes away and they can’t reach survivors. Grants as small as $15 can be given and TDF vets each organization first to ensure it’s a non-profit.
Family endowment fund - $25,000 minimum recommended and you spend 4% of a 20 quarter average.
Qualified Charitable Deductions (QCD’s) are being impacted by IRS restrictive ruling. By using a Donor Designated fund, you say who you want to send money to, when and how much. It is designated up front so gets around IRS ruling. From IRA can do up to $100,000 per person or $200,000 per couple.
Also people can start scholarships and fund with IRA money.

- Invested fund (is a fee) if CC is staying over $25,000 regularly
- Family foundation plus; $10 million or more; talk to them first if considering $250,000 minimum
