President Brad Thorp opened the meeting at the Clubhouse at Yankee Trace with the Pledge of Allegiance. PDG Harvey Smith gave the prayer, and Brad led the singing of God Bless America.
The guests at the meeting included:
Mato Palovic, our exchange student from Slovakia. His new host exchange family accompanied him to the meeting but did not stay. They included Diana Pressnell and her two children, Alexis, 9, and Lucas, 10, of the Sugarcreek Twp./Spring Valley area. Diana said she grew up in a Rotarian family, but this is her first time hosting. Her husband Josh is part of the picture, but did not accompany the group at the meeting.; and Amanda Wilson, the guest of Jeff Senney. She is a Talent Management Consultant with CMAX Advisors at their Dayton/Centerville office. The company headquarters is in Columbus. She said she is a "recovering CPA" who is now with HR, helping with HR outsourcing, recruiting, etc.

David Trout, who has been in Sanibel, Fla. for the winter, was recognized with a ruby-studded Paul Harris Fellow pin for being a Paul Harris, plus six, donor. He also got to feel the cold blast of winter which has come back to the area after a warm spell here.

Member Judy Budi said it was time for new member Bridget Herzog to remove her new member ribbon, and that Jim Hester no longer needed his new member seal on his badge, as both had fulfilled the new member commitments that help them learn about the club.
Needed for the conference: New shoes and socks for the Shoes for Orphan Souls project, and wine and crackers for the basket for the silent auction. Bridget Herzog is collecting the shoes and socks and Dick Hoback is collecting the wine. He has a basket of 16-to-18 bottles, but could use more. And thus far, no crackers or cheese have been donated.
Ron said the Therapeutic Riding Institute is sponsoring a fund-raising event Saturday, April 13 at 6 p.m. Cost is $75. It is a 10th anniversary celebration. See Ron for more details.
Carrie Lifer, a State Farm Insurance agent and guest of member Arnie Biondo, has submitted her application to join the club: and Andrew Carter, who retired after 25 years with Wells Fargo and Fifth Third banks and is now a consultant for banks across America, is also joining the club, Brad said.
Brad said the club has added six new members this year. To receive a presidential citation from Rotary International, the club needed to fulfill seven major categories, but was unable to fill the one that required adding two female members. Despite all, the club is to receive a silver presidential citation, he said.
Brad said there was still time to register for the upcoming District Conference April 29/30 in Mason. He said eleven members of our club have signed up to go.
Boyd Preston thanked the Rotary members Ed Flohre, Ann Blackburn, and Chuck King, who helped with our additional Service Day this past Tuesday at the Walton House, with Steve Feverston, president of the Centerville-Washington Twp. Historical Society helping out, and the fourth one in the picture shown below.
Boyd also asked members if July 23 would work out for our second all-club service day for the year. No one objected at the meeting.
Brad noted that Design Outreach plans to hold a gala on May 5 in Columbus. Tickets are $35. The event is at 8 p.m. in the evening. They are the ones involved with supplying the pumps to be used in our African water project. Check with Brad for more info on this.
HAPPY BUCKS:
Bill Niehaus, standing in for Sgt.-at-Arms Erich Eggers, collected Happy Bucks for St. Vincent de Paul. Bill noted April 7 is known as National Beer Day, for on this day in 1933, the end of Prohibition was declared, after 13 years of having to make your own or sneak it.
It is amazing how many beer drinkers or beer aficionados the club has, as many gave an extra Happy Buck for Beer Day, along with a buck for St. Vincent, and/or Fred.
Then there was Joyce Young, who gave one for wine.
Mato turned 19 and said he will (or would like to...not sure which) spend his 19th birthday in Las Vegas, while he was 18 in New York when he got time to himself. In honor of Beer Day, he said he will see if his host family would like to sample some beer from Slovakia, which he found is available here in the area. Many Germans prefer a Czech beer: Pilsner Urquell, to their own German beers, but not sure what brand of Slovakian beer Mato found.
Greg Horn gave one for Beer Day and one for Cabela's opening its new sporting good store in Centerville.
Boyd Preston thanked the group who showed up to spruce up the gardens at the Walton House as another addition to our Service Days March 19 and March 23. See picture below:
Ed Flohre said he is happy to note that Dorothy Lane Market won a national award for its Killer Brownie.
John Beals said he was happy for his and Sally's annual trip east to Hilton Head.
Lee Hieronymus said he was happy to see one of the greatest Rotarians in our midst today: Fred
Butch Spencer gave a buck for National Bourbon Day, whenever that might be.
Fred Weir gave his Happy Buck for being Outside for once...
Jim Briggs got a round of applause for his $56 for the 56 years he and his wife have been happily married, though he said his wife might have only given $10 had she been there.
Deb Dulaney said she was happy as her employer was recently honored. She also noted that she has accepted an
AG position with the District Governor's office next year, and will be working with West Milton, Vandalia, and Oakwood Rotaries, though she will be the district's grant treasurer, so will keep her eye out for our club then too.
Brad gave some Happy Bucks for Fred and for the fact that he has cornered a tee time at Pebble Beach on May 10.
Jim Hester said he was happy for the recent Reds wins and noted that his son, who has a science engineering degree has been looking for a job.
