Our speaker today was Toniya Singh sharing thoughts on diversity.
PDG Sivaji Subramaniam introduced our speaker, Toniya Singh, who has been involved in the Centerville-Washington Diversity Council.. Toniya comes from Bombay and lived in North Dakota before coming to Ohio. She is a consultant, trainer, coach for schools and Fortune 500 companies and works at Lion Share LLC.
Toniya started by saying diversity is many things to many people. She speaks from the point of an immigrant, which she is.
Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, “The ancestor of every action is a thought.” She will present a thought today.
Toniya had the group plan a word association game, saying the first word you think of when you see the word. She used: diversity, immigrant, woman, refugee, and minority.
Words most say are the ones we are primed to say. There are many other words that also surface but take more thought.
Toniya shared two different perspectives of how people speak to immigrants. Most say, “You are so lucky you escaped a horrible situation.” But a more positive statement would be, “Thank goodness you’re here now, brining your talents and skills.” The greatest good you can do for another is not to just share your riches but to reveal their own.
Adam Manning gave thanks to Toniya for sharing her thoughts.
He also announced the Dayton Diaper Depot is doing bourbon basket raffle. (See info below)
Wyatt Thorp then came up to have his “new member” ribbon removed as he has completed all required tasks. Congratulations, Wyatt!
Next week our speaker will be Erik Collins, Development Direction for the City of Centerville.
