Meeting on 08/24/2017

Kisha Taylor and Dan Johnson served as the official greeters this day.

Here Dan is seen greeting our guest speaker Bill Menker

In this picture Dan and Kisha greet PDG Harvey Smith, with a cheerful Brian Hayes in the background photo bombing the scene.

And here we see Adam Manning being greeted, with Brian passing by.

One of our past presidents, Brad Thorp, gets a welcome hand from both of our greeters. This is not a video, so you missed seeing Kisha give her handshake.

And in the picture below Kisha greets Arnie Biondo as Carol Kennard passes by in front.

Never too early, nor too late, Deb Dulaney gets a cherry hello.

And you can tell that Kisha gets a kick out of greeting Mike Wier, the musical tuba player from the Brass Band set.

Dan Sortman has been off for a while, so it's good to see him back and being greeted before a good meal and much camaraderie.

The next picture shows Mark Febus arriving with our ever enthusiastic greeter Kisha  welcoming him.

And below you will see that Kisha was also among the large gathering before the meeting of the Pancake Breakfast Committee, doing all the hard work of organizing tasks and duties and equipment and supplies for the big October fund-raiser. Come one. Come All.

The Centerville Rotary Club met at The Clubhouse at Yankee Trace at noon. Past President Ron Hollenbeck led the Pledge of Allegiance. PDG Harvey Smith led the prayer and Brad Thorp led the singing of God Bless America.

Today's guests included: Our guest speaker Bill Menker, Adult Team Leader at Washington-Centerville Public Library. He is pictured above and below in this Bulletin. (Hint: Best picture at top by Carol Kennard)

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Past President Ron Hollenbeck stood in for our new president Peachy Metzner, who is still working on getting back to health.
Here Ron is seen talking with Kim Senft-Paras regarding the upcoming Peace Walk in September
(see below).

Ron said Peachy plans to see a cardiologist next week and that he and Boyd Preston hope to be able to take Peachy out to lunch on Wednesday. Peachy says he misses everyone, as we miss him.
Ron said he expects some special guests next week, including our new District Governor and our new Centerville City Manager.
Greg Horn, who recently retired as the long-time Centerville city manager, has asked for and received a six month leave of absence from the club, Ron said.
Ron had two tickets for a Dragon's game next Thursday, that Mike Wier asked him to auction off, and when he asked for bids no one offered, so he said he would bid $20 and then Pat Beckel spoke up and said he would bid $20, and a blue ticket he found in his pocket, and Ron accepted the bid. Ron's first request to start the bidding at $1,000 may have frightened a few bidders from getting involved.
Ron said the district has been asked to contribute $25,000 to become a Peace Builder for Rotary, which would amount to $8 per member, but rather than hit up each member for the money, the board decided to give $560 from the club for its 70 members.

Kim Senft-Paras said the Dayton Rotary hopes other Rotarys will join them in the Peace Walk Sept. 10 downtown and that we should nominate a peace walker from the club. The walk is from 4 to 6 p.m., with people gathering at 3 p.m., and a band concert afterwards.

Ron mentioned again that if we want to sponsor a youth exchange student for the 2018-19 Rotary Year, the deadline for getting information in about who might be interested in helping house the youth is mid September, so let Mark Febus or Rebecca Quinones know of your interest in helping.

Frank Perez said that he and Jennifer Gibbs are helping drive the donations from sponsors for the Pancake Breakfast this year, as our dear great fund-raiser Shelley Fisher is out of the loop for medical reasons, and that they can use help in getting sponsors for the breakfast.

Boyd Preston had a sign-up sheet for ordering the yellow T-shirts worn for Rotarian at Work service days. They are $10 each and the cost will be put on your next quarterly billing, he said. The club is picking up the extra cost on the shirts, as they are really more than $10.

Boyd asked for volunteers to help stuff the pancake breakfast tickets into envelopes after the meeting, which should take 15 to 20 minutes, he said.
Here are those sitting at the speaker's table. Note Joyce Young at the right, not exactly happy to be back from Michigan where she got to be with family. Still, she gave for Happy Bucks. Below this picture are several other candid shots.
HAPPY BUCKS:

Sgt.-at-arms Erich Eggers collected Happy Bucks for Operation Warm. Each $20 donation buys a new children's winter coat distributed by Hannah's Treasure Chest in partnership with local social agencies. Mark Balsan, our club secretary made the rounds with the collection cup. In the picture below, Erich is seen standing as lunch is being served. Dick Hoback is the one seated.
Mark put his head down just as this picture was made.

Dave Trout has to be singled out for his generous coat donation of $180 this week. He said he was Happy because his cardiologist released him 3 days ago so he could go back to his regular exercise/walking routine and he has been walking five miles every day and decided to give back a dollar a mile to the club, so he had $175 to give, but to make it so they could have enough for the coats he would add another $5. He said he was happy to have Phyllis at the Service Day and to get off a half hour early so they could see his granddaughter in Columbus, who scored six goals for her soccer team. And her other granddaughter from Cincinnati was third in a class of advanced Mandarin, spending two months in China to help her learn it. Dave said he and Phyllis had to clear out a great big room cluttered with bikes and other items before they could put everything back in an ordered way. You can check pictures on Facebook to see them in the room at Hannah's Treasure Chest. The other service day pictures are also to be seen there. Great job, All.
And then there's Erich Eggers himself, who gave another $100 for coats, this time in Pat Beckel's name, for Pat inviting him to play golf at the Springfield Country Club. He said it was a great time and great club, but that his back gave out after 12 holes. Don Stewart and Jeff Senney were to make up the foursome with Pat, but Jeff didn't show up or give notification, he said. Tsk, Tsk, Jeff.

Ed Flohre gave for a coat, stating he missed last week and therefore we did not get any Killer Brownies when our speaker Zebbie from the Culinary Institute at DLM was there.

Dan Johnson, one of today's greeters, gave for a coat, plus a dollar for his daughter who turned one on Wednesday. He said he was Happy as he took his daughter to Tennessee to see the solar eclipse.

Joyce Young gave $20 for a coat also, noting it was to sadly announce she had to leave the fun she was having with family in Michigan last week.

Harvey Smith gave $2, stating he was only invited to play golf at Rollandia by Patrick.
Brad Thorp gave the $20 he pledged last week and told people ordering the T-shirts with Rotarian at Work written on them to be cautious, as his wife took his and laid it out on their bed with a list of chores for him to do.
He also announced that two weeks from this day Benham's Grove would be hosting a Sense of Taste from 5 to 8 p.m. Tickets are $30. The event is sponsored by the Centerville Historical Society. He said he only had nine tickets left.
And then there was a donation for two-and-a-half coats....and here my notes are murky...as between Brad and Kim was the note...and a make-up service at St. Vincent...which either came from Brad or Kim, who I know also paid for a coat.

Then Ron Hollenbeck gave for two coats, mentioning a neighbor of his, who had a wife with health issues, but noting the man had a massive heart attack.
Irene Ullmer gave a Happy Buck and when Erich kept after her to say what she was Happy about, she said: "I laugh every time I look in the mirror." This brought a big roar of laughter from the club. In appreciation for all at the club and her mother's continued wit at age 94, her daughter donated her Happy Buck.
Jim Harris gave for half a coat and Frank Perez gave.... for using the Zip Line at Hocking Hills.
Pat Beckel gave, noting his grandma walked 15 miles every day, "and to this day, we don't know where the Hell she is." That's Pat for you.
Butch Spencer gave and Dale Berry gave and Dan Steward and Kisha Taylor, and Boyd, noting his coat money was in appreciation for everyone who participated in the Club's Service days...noting that there were 55 able bodies altogether, with 12 of them family and friends.
Lee Hieronymus gave, noting he was out trimming hedges and only got stung once when he ran into a hornet's nest. The other guy got stung about eight times, he said.
Deb Dulaney said she was Happy because she is off on a trip to Glacier National Park.
John Callander gave, noting something about volunteering, and then we all sang Happy Birthday to Ed Flohre.

Today's Speaker:  Bill Menker, Adult Team Leader at Washington-Centerville Public Library, speaking about how to use the library for business research, and other personal uses, such as finding personal information about the people who live in your neighborhood or elsewhere.

Member Chuck King introduced our speaker, who sometimes closes his eyes, possibly when a flash goes off....Bill Menker

Bill began by saying he last spoke to our group in 2010. He began by speaking about Business First, showing us a listing of what the program entails.
He repeated the points above and then said there are print and online resources, with 50 databases, available 24/7, and other information as shown in the second list below
He said you can access the materials by using your library card and online at wclibrary.info/business
You can access research guides and small business FAQs. You can Ask a Librarian for live help and have live chats when the library is open, he said.
There are Business Request Forms and you can Book a Librarian for getting one-on-one help when starting research or learning a new skill. There are classes and workshops about everything from selling on e-Bay to Facebook and Twitter, and on-line classes, and research database access.

By using the A&Z Database you can create just about any kind of search you want for business or residential people finding, Bill said.

He showed an example of what you would see if you called up AK Steel. You could get a profile of the company, the principal people, and pages and pages of information about the company, from revenue trends to employees, etc.
You can find a person and make background checks and find previous employment history of someone. You can use mapping to check out specific neighborhoods. You can do advanced searches and have access to 30 million businesses and 270 million residents, he said.
Bill said you can use map-based searches to search out specific things, like all the wholesale florists or all businesses in a five-mile radius, or one hundred businesses with five to ten million annual revenue. You can look at non-profits with 500 or more employees, etc.
In a residential search you could look at how many people in a specific neighborhood are dog owners or how many unmarried people 58 and older own motorcycles, etc.

Bill said the library's next big How-To Fest will be held Sept. 9. There will be 30 different stations to show you how to do various things, from drones, to 3-D Printing, How to tie a tie, knit a scarf, etc.

Bill got to pick the winning split-the-pot drawing, and for the second time in recent weeks, the lady who likes to laugh when she looks in the mirror...won. It obviously pays to laugh alot.
The meeting was closed with the reciting of the Rotary Four-Way Test.
