President Arnie Biondo welcomed everyone to the Centerville Rotary Club and lead the reciting of the Pledge. PDG Harvey Smith provided the prayer.

  • The thought of the day is from T. S. Eliot: “Only those who risk going too far can possibly find out how far one can go.”
  • Today’s meeting is a club assembly. We will review the past 6 months’ accomplishments, discuss plans for the balance of the year and elect the new slate of club officers for 2023-24.
  • Guests include:

    • Cody Terrell – friend of Adam Manning. Cody has turned in an application which is with the Board for review.
    • Robert Dorwart - friend of Erich Eggers- retired Air Force physician who recently moved to Springboro from Carmel, IN.
  • Gina Smith and Ron Bowerstock’s applications have been approved. Their inductions will be scheduled shortly. Gina’s sponsor is Carol Kennard and Ron’s is Harvey Smith.
  • Our greeters today were Dan Wilson & Crissy Allums.

Membership (Dan Johnson): Committee members are Kim, Dan, Scott, and Sivaji. 8 new members since August, 2 to be inducted on February 2nd and Cody’s application being reviewed. Committee is looking to simplify the application process and following up on existing members who have not made a club meeting for a while.

Club Affairs (Brad Huffman): For District Youth Exchange program, Springboro club has committed to receiving the current inbound student. District and Brad are looking into possibility of receiving a 2nd student next year which our club would be interested in hosting. He already has identified 1 non-Rotarian family who has agreed to be a host. Pancake breakfast fundraiser was another success this year and we are starting to work on the Golf outing which is confirmed for May 5th (Friday again) at Yankee Trace. Looking for committee members. Please let Brad know if interested. Bob Sachs volunteered.

Community Service (Crissy Allums): Following Adam has been tough, but she has had great support from the club which has been appreciated. We have been very busy with 4 service projects already completed this year and more to come. They have helped create good visibility for club in our community. She is exploring several ideas including with the Food Bank & Hannah’s Treasure Chest.
Brian H. reminded all committee leaders that the club is here to help and that they do not need to feel like they are operating in a vacuum.
Arnie added that Crissy is open to other ideas for service projects and if anyone is interested in serving on her committee, please see either her or Arnie.
  • Social report (Sofie): We have had 4 events already this year (Sueno, Zink’s, Trivia Night at Lock 27, and the Christmas party). Goal is 1 event each month. Next activity will be held at Bock Family Brewery here in Washington Township on January 27th.

New Generations (Susan Schnell): committee covers several activities: Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA), Interact club at Centerville High School, scholarship program, 4-way speech competition and education. Very excited that we now have a new advisor for the Interact Club (Mrs. Manfredi) and have student officers in place. End January will be 1st general meeting. They are looking now for the community project to undertake. We already have 2 students interested in attending RYLA which will be held March 17-19. Kisha is the 4 Way Speech Contest leader for the club and is already working on it.

International Service (Bill Menker): Next Saturday, 5 club members are going to Design Outreach HQs in Columbus to help assemble pump systems for installation in 3rd world countries. This is the group the club has supported in the past with pumps in Haiti and Malawi. The committee is also heavily involved in the Heart-to-Heart multi-District humanitarian service initiative. Objective is to build a school in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. Ron H. will be speaking to the club on February 2nd about his trip there as part of this effort. Ron has accepted the District request to establish and lead the position of a District 6670 International Coordinator to help encourage and implement international projects.

Rotary Foundation (Frank Perez): The club continues its strong support for the Foundation and is a leading club in donations for the District. We had 3 new Paul Harris Fellows this year which brings the club to 41 in total. There are 6 Major Donors, and 4 members are PH +8, the final level before Major Donor. Our club’s all-time giving is a very impressive $513,000+. The District Grant seminar (via Zoom) is on February 8th, and we need a couple members to attend (club presence is required to be eligible for District grants). If you are interested, please see Frank.

Education (Sofie Ameloot): Committee is meeting today with Brad Thorp for update on the Educational Foundation finances. Trustees will shortly be reviewing the scholarship application form and then issuing to schools for distribution to interested students. Their goal is to issue 5 college and 1 Trade School scholarships ($2,000/ each).

District Events (Brian Hayes): Rotary Leadership Institute (RLI) will be held on Saturday, January 28th. There are 3 sessions (I, II, III), held 2 times a year with each about 6 hours long. They are a great way to better understand what Rotary is all about and how the clubs function and interact with other clubs, the District and Rotary International. Cost is $50/ session and club will reimburse you. District conference will be held in April. More details to follow. Brian finished with a request to the club to forward any speaker or topic ideas for future club weekly meetings to Adam.

Club 2022-23 Goals (Arnie Biondo):

Above goals have been approved by the Board. Club is doing very well against most goals. A key focus area going forward is in Public Relations. Arnie is looking for a member willing to take on the chair of this committee and would appreciate any ideas from the club on how best to proceed. Sivaji suggested that some of our social events should include family members and Chuck proposed including sponsors in some to give us the opportunity to share with them how their donations are helping the community and beyond.
Arnie finished with a challenge to all members: What will you do for Rotary in 2023 and beyond?

Our incoming President Elect and our Club Affairs Chair with Elda, their strongest supporter.

Next week’s speaker will be Ms. Amanda DeLotelle from Miami Valley Meals.
President Biondo led the group in reciting the 4 Way Test and wished everyone a good week.
