Our speakers today were from the Interact Club at Centerville High School.

Ben Lawson has been the Interact Advisor over the past year and will continue next year. He is a math teacher at the High School.

Emma Danis & Braden Doudican shared about their Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) experience at Camp Kern.

Braden shared that RYLA was his first Rotary experience. There were 60-70 students from 25 schools, Friday-Sunday at Camp Kern. They were put in small groups with other students.

Friday they played field games, and on Saturday they had field activities, did the Tango Tower, and had guest speakers. Each group had to do a presentation on “What it means to Unite for Good”.

They had team challenges and Emma’s team won the Balloon Tower. They enjoyed the teamwork, creativity, and developing connections with other kids.

They also did an Adventure Game - scavenger hunt throughout the camp. Throughout the Group Project, they bonded as a team.

They enjoyed the guest speakers, as they shared how to be a better person and more effective leader, and learned about Rotary. Speakers included James Terpenning, a paralympian and Dottie Meade, DG.

They shared the weekend left a lasting impact through:
  • New perspectives
  • Real friendships
  • Leadership skills
  • Built on creativity and critical thinking skills
  • Learned to work with a new diverse group

Nate Borgerding and Ben Edwards (President of Interact) then shared what the Interact Club has been involved with this year.

They were involved in several volunteer projects including Pancake breakfast, Grant Park tree planting, House of Bread (cleaned right before Thanksgiving).

They gathered Christmas toiletries for a Dayton Backpack project at Christmas time. They helped with sewing blankets and last weekend, did the park mulching project.

Looking ahead, both Nate and Ben are Juniors and they want to do a lot more next year with Interact. They are in a rebuilding phase and are working to expand the club.

Their goals for next year include:
  • Expand club
  • More organized; build community
  • Service opportunities with Rotary
  • Fundraising for larger club projects

They gave thanks to Centerville Rotary for the help our Club provides.

Ben Lawson noted they also want to work with other school’s Interact Clubs.

They currently have 11 members, and the Club is being rediscovered by students this year so it should grow next year.

Kelly McDonald thanked them for their energy and enthusiasm this rebuilding year. He invited them to join us on May 29 for the Peace Pole dedication at Grant Park-Kennard Nature Nook.

Kelly gave an update on the Golf Outing. Big thanks to all who have contributed. Volunteer sign up sheets are available now and we need help filling those positions so the event runs smoothly. Please let him know where you can help!
  • Thursday evening setup
  • Friday 6:00 am set up
  • Friday 8:30 am start time (1/2 hour later than last year)
