Club President Vas Appalaneni opened the Centerville Rotary Club meeting at The Clubhouse at Yankee Trace with the Pledge of Allegiance. Member Brad Thorp gave the prayer and Lee Hieronymus led the singing of God Bless America.
The guests at the meeting included: Bo Thorp, son of member Brad Thorp; Walter Senney, father of member Jeff Senney; Robert Stemper, a potential new member from the Libertyville Sunrise Rotary Club in Illinois.

Club President Vas Appalaneni said member Bill Abrams still has a few Super Bowl raffle tickets left to sell.
Peachy said there were still several families left in the Adopt-A-Family Christmas list, but members quickly spoke up and took the names. Drop off times for the wrapped gifts will be on Dec. 4 and Dec. 8 at Kline Elementary School, 99 Virginia Ave...from 3 to 7:30 p.m. on the fourth and from 7 a.m. to noon on Dec. 8.
Last week member Joyce Young asked members to participate in a project jointly with the local Red Cross to help area military Veterans. She asked that members bring in Christmas cards that can be signed by members and given to locals Veterans in the community and to those on active duty or at the VA. She reminded members to bring in the cards so they can be signed by our club members at the first meeting in December.
Joyce also accepted the Paul Harris Fellowship certificate and pin for the late Jeff Vernooy, who was head of the Disability Services at Wright State University, Joyce donated the award in memory of Jeff , who worked with the disabled and helped to make the university accessible to them, She said she had hoped his widow would be able to accept the award, but she is in Florida at this time.
Sgt.-at-Arms Erich Eggers collected Happy Bucks for the House of Bread..
Club member and tuba player Mike Weir announced that the Columbus brass band, of which he is a member, called the Dublin Silver Band, came in second at the recent U.S. Open Brass Band Championships in St. Charles, Ill., a western suburb of Chicago. The band took four of the nine awards, winning for "most entertaining," and "best new arrangement," as well as being tied for best small group. The other band from Ohio got two of the awards, he said.
Pat Beckel noted that Sunday, Nov. 22, will be the Holiday tree lighting at Benham's Grove at 6:30 p.m. The city's Holiday Walk will take place from 1 to 5 p.m., ending with the tree lighting ceremony and children singing, and Santa arriving.
Club member Carol Kennard announced that all are invited to her Retirement Open House at Yankee Trace on Dec. 11 from 4 to 7 p.m. Of course we all knew that from the announcement the week before from our mystery guest when Carol was out of town. We appreciate the invite, Carol. A happy retirement from your job overseeing the Centerville-Washington Park District. There will be a cash bar..
The club's annual Christmas dinner will take place beginning at 6 p.m. Membe Ron Hollenbeck said the group would like this to be a "nicer dress affair" and that the traditional turkey dinner with all the fixings will be served. Anyone who needs other fare than that should notify him, he said. There will be a signup for members and their guests at the next meeting.. The club will pay for each member and one guest for that member, The cost of the dinner for additional invitees will be probably around $12, he said. Forte will help entertain after dinner and there will be other activities and a special guest appearance, he said.

Joyce said part of the problem in ending Polio involves tribal cultures in several of the countries that still have Polio, such as Nigeria, where they do not trust anyone outside of their tribe. Until a country is without any new cases of Polio for three years, it is not considered free of Polio, she said. Joye said one of the links tells of an Indian woman who had Polio as a child and was abandoned by her mother. An American couple adopted her. She did not havet much motion in her leg, but now she does just about everything, Joyce said.
Many people do not know of the leadership role Rotary has played in End Polio Now, she said. When Rotary got involved there were 268,000 cases, she said. Now the numbers have diminished to a few hundred cases in three countries, with Pakistan having the most cases,with 187..
