The Centerville Rotary Club met at noon at the Clubhouse at Yankee Trace Golf Course. President Ron Hollenbeck led the Pledge of Allegiance, PDG Harvey Smith gave the prayer, and Drew Carter led the singing of God Bless America, to the satisfaction of all, once again.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

President Ron Hollenbeck reminded everyone of the upcoming District Conference meeting that was changed from the Marriott to the Manor House in Mason, on April 28-29, with the golf outing April 28. The silent auction will also be included, and Dick Hoback is in charge of helping to get the wine barrow together.
Ron said anyone with service project ideas for the 2017-18 year should let him know so we might add them to ones we have been doing to get grant money to aid us in our projects. Project grant requests need to be in by the end of March.

Ron noted the night's social, a mixer at 5:30 p.m. at Lock 27 for members and spouses and prospective members.

Our two guests from Day of Caring 365 came to thank us for our Happy Bucks donation of $1,057 to help the homeless. This is their seventh year of holding fund-raising pancake breakfasts, now at 40 different sites. Hans Marlette said it was Jan Venkayya's idea to start the fund-raisers, as she saw the need and had the vision to do something about it. For every dollar collected they can provide four meals, he said. Feb. 26 is the next Day of Caring. More info can be found on their Web site, he said.

HAPPY BUCKS:

Our Sgt.-at-Arms Erich Eggers collected Happy Bucks to benefit Homefull, which helps clients get jobs and places to live, working along with St. Vincent dePaul, which provides meals and shelter to the homeless.
He recognized our guests and started the Happy Bucks donations by giving $10, stating he was happy to see Graham Ross come back and decide to join the club.
Bob Fry gave for Harvey praying for Peachy, noting that he was not sure why Harvey included Peachy in his prayers, with Peachy then stating, "I'm in a fog," which sounded like maybe he was under the weather with all the flu and colds going around.
Jeff Senney said he was in Washington D.C. during the presidential inauguration and walked all over and got to see part of the parade, but when it started to rain, all they saw was faces pushed up against the car windows. The women's march the next day was packed with people and he said he took a lot of photos. He said they spoke on "a half a dozen different issues." He said it seemed they all felt that Trump was against them.
Rebecca Quinones said she was happy because on a very cold day when she went to get gas, the gas attendant said, "Let me pump your gas."
Brandon Creech, Jeff's guest, noted that he was just glad to be here. It was noted that he would like to be involved in more social programs.
Dan Sortman gave in honor of his daughter, noting that she is a Phi Beta Kappa.
Carol Kennard gave for being Happy and Brad gave $5 evidently for just being Brad, as he didn't stop to get our attention.
Phil Raynes gave for two separate things, for letting people know there is a Rotary bowling league they can join and for Carol Kennard getting him involved with the Diversity Council. He said the MLK Breakfast was a great experience, and Carol Kennard noted that the speaker's outstanding speech can be heard on the Diversity Council's link.
It was noted that "the only thing that conquers hate is love."
Sivaji read an excerpt from Guideposts magazine that told about all the things the Rotary Foundation does with Happy Bucks that support it. "Giving is always the best and blessed," he said.
Ann Blackburn gave for our guests Graham and Art being here, and Art in turn gave, being happy that now "Ann will quit calling me."
Peachy gave, noting that he has been in a fog the last five days, and was perhaps defogging.
Ron and Boyd gave, stating "Peachy has been in a fog for five days. Has anybody noticed the difference?"

Today's Speaker: Daniela Weaver, Public Relations for Drive for Smiles program

Daniela is seen with the founder of the program, James Raikes.

Boyd Preston introduced our speaker Daniela Weaver and the program she came to talk about.

He said "every kid goes to college and is told to find your career path and go do it." But James Raikes believes that you need to find your passions and see if you can't use your Land Rover to travel and have fun driving through Columbia and Guatemala, and then his wife said, "if you don't find a way to help people along the way, you're going to go straight to Hell."

Boyd said Daniela spent five years in Guatemala and wanted to come back and help the people with their needs. All the while she wondered, how can we help others and have some fun in what we're doing.

Daniela said she can believe that her mother, Raikes wife, said "he would go straight to Hell if he didn't help everyone out." She explained how their program, which is working on getting it's non-profit organization status, uses uniquely modified Land Rovers to create expeditions to raise funds to benefit children and ecology.

As their Web site, www.driveforsmiles.com/ states:

A group of Land Rover enthusiasts band together to make  dream trips
to benefit children and the ecology.

WHO:   Team Members from around the world and their Uniquely Customized Land Rovers
WHERE: Lebanon, Ohio USA to any destination around the world!!!
WHAT: Land Rover vehicles that have been modified for these Expeditions.

They want to do projects that lead to sustainable improvements, Daniela said. The Land Rover group started as a hobby and then evolved into a charity. The Land Rovers have four large spot lights on the roof and have been modified inside so that they can do a complete snorkel to go through deeper waters, she said. The interior reminds people of the 747, she said. Everyone is connected to a computer in the car. The numerous modifications can be seen on their Web site.

They raise money through vehicle advertisements, events and festivals, auto shows, such as the Cincinnati show in February, local groups, and Rock Bands, and people hosting dinners at their homes, she said.

Past projects included COPROGRESO, organized in Columbia to provide free child care, raising $9,000 to help with funding for a library and a large Christmas event for children and their families, which included 900 people.

In 2016, Hogar Miguel Magone. They had a group of 18 people in Guatemala, who raised money to pay for the $100 uniforms for 125 school children. They brought shoes from the U.S. then too. The school is run by one woman who takes kids from parents in prison, she said.
She opens her home three times a day to 100 other kids, she said. Local people bring eggs and chickens, and someone always shows up. It costs $700 a month for water that one company supplies, she said. They started digging a well by hand two years ago. One man and his two sons reached 115 meters, but the system is slow and one bucket at a time and they have reached solid rock now, she said.

In the future they want to have a drive for water, she said. They hope to get ten people to donate $400 per month for the next two years to raise the $42,000 they need for the well and pump. They want to get the well done by April 2019 and the 10 contributors and their families will be invited when two or more Land Rovers make the trek down. The first four contributors will have a seat reserved if they wish to drive down, she said. They also hope to journey from Cincinnati to Santiago, Chile

The Cincinnati Auto Expo is Feb. 8-12.
