Happy Bucks this quarter are going toward Hannah’s Treasure Chest for Operation Warm, providing winter coats to children in need. Sergeant of Arms today was Pat Beckel, with help from Jim Stuart.
Pat Beckel announce for the next 4 weeks we will be raffling off bottles of booze that were generously donated for Operation Warm. Opening bid minimum is 3 coats per bottle.

- Pat Beckel said insurance bills have jumped in cost all over the country, have lost 50 insurance companies in state of OH. Remember it’s the company, not the agent. There have been so many massive losses in Ohio recently driving up costs.

- Adam Manning attended his 20th HS reunion where he enjoyed seeing lots of friends, and noted everyone has put on weight!

- Lee Hieronymus said it was a pleasure to see Scott Henry and Chief Kujuwa, and said he had no farm report for Harvey today, but then continued to share that hay crops are finally coming in.

Our speaker today was Scott Henry, Safety Educator for the Washington Township Fire Department.
Scott Henry started by giving thanks to Rotary as his son went on a Rotary Youth Exchange trip to France for a year. Scott said it was the best year of his life.
Scott shared information about life-saving CPR. What is CPR? The whole purpose is to try to get the heart started again. Difference between cardiac arrest (heart stops) and heart attack (artery blockage). Pushing on chest doesn’t help heart attack.
Yankee Trace has an AED on the back wall by the restaurant and also one outside pro shop. They are here for anyone to use when needed.
Cardiac arrest can happen anywhere at any time, and you can save a life by having the basic knowledge and know where AED’s are located around the community.
Scott works & teaches under the American Heart Association, and has been really busy teaching classes lately, especially after the Lamar Hamlin success story.
There are 430,000 cardiac arrest deaths in the US in a typical year, which equals to half the population of the Dayton metropolitan area. Scott wants to limit numbers with training.
Globally more people die from cardiac arrest than many other reasons. There is something we can do by getting more people trained in CPR.
First 3 steps are done by bystanders.
There are about 380 AED’s around the Centerville-Washington community.
Bystanders perform CPR only 46% of the time. There are more than 350,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests occur each year in the US.
Scott said, “That heart’s not going to start itself! Don’t be afraid. Give CPR. Save a life.” You can double/triple people’s survival by doing CPR.
The process has changed over the years but it is made easier now:
- Call 911, put hands in center of chest and push hard and fast.
The rate is a little faster than one per second. Do it to the tune of Staying Alive or Baby Shark. Professional rescue personnel still do chest compressions and breathing but for basic lifesaving, just do chest compressions.
CPR keeps blood moving up to the brain. If you get tired, have someone else take over. CPR helps to keep brain viable until the next step.
AED operation is simple: turn on power button and machine tells you what to do.
Remember they will thank you. Doing CPR doesn’t benefit you, but it benefits someone else!
The Washington Township Fire Department offers monthly CPR classes. The next CPR class is September 21 at the Fire HQ on McEwen Road. Cost is $45 for training and the certification is good for 2 years. Scott said they will do a special class if we get a group from Rotary.
Remember: Push on chest, hard & fast.
Rand Oliver noted there is a sign up sheet on the table to indicate if anyone is interested in participating in a class. Even if you’ve had the training before, it’s a good time for refresher.
