Centerville Rotary Meeting Highlights
Our Rotary theme for this month is
Economic & Community Development.

President Adam Manning welcomed everyone to the Centerville Rotary Club and led reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. Brian Hayes provided the prayer and Brad Thorp led singing God Bless America.

Today’s quote provided by Don Overly: "Be the change that you wish  to see in the world."    Mahatma Ghandi

Thanks to our greeters today, Uriah Anderson & Dan Johnson.

Our guests today included former member Dan Sortman; and Pat Turnbull’s guest, Janet Jackson.

President Manning shared another story of Rotarians abroad, as Brad Huffman has returned from his travels.

Brad traveled to Germany with his brother, Jeff and also got together with his host family from when he was a Rotary Exchange student. He spent Oktoberfest at his host Aunt’s castle that was first built in 800, with additions in 1600.

Today’s announcements:
  • Rotarians gave 31.5 hours of work during service week. Victory Project work will take place this week with 20 Interact kids signed up to help.
  • Pancake day s getting closer. Please sign up to work and ask others to help, too. He gave special recognition to Sofie, and through her committee’s hard work, we have raised over $21,000 in sponsorships this year!
  • The next Rotary Board meeting is Oct 13, 5:30 at the RecPlex
  • Rotarians will be at Bill Yeck Park this afternoon at the Park District’s Hop and Howl handing out goodies to kids. Jeff will be at the CWPD booth.
  • Uriah A reminded people to pay for your pancake tickets and get more from him to sell!
  • Brian H is getting ready to send out bills again and will send Sofie after you if it’s not paid :-)
  • Carol K reminded this Saturday is the last chance for Pancake sponsors to be included in the publicity.
  • Sofie A reminded all of upcoming social events:
    • Coffee Club at ContempoRoast, Tues, Oct 7, 7:30 am
    • Rotary Women Connect at Old Scratch, Thurs, Oct 9, 5:30 pm
    • Next Social Oct 16, at Uptown Cottage, starting at 5:00 pm.
  • Ron B is out of the hospital and in rehab. Please keep him in your prayers.

Happy Bucks this quarter will be determined at the next Board meeting.

Our Sergeant at Arms this week was Pat Beckel with assistance by Brian Hayes.

Happy Bucks were generously given for:
  • Pat B announced this Saturday is Fall Fest at Stubbs Park from noon-5pm with activities for the whole family. He was so happy to see Dan Sortman back; and son, Duncan made it through the 3rd round of The Voice and Pat had to send in paperwork, so he feels that’s a good sign!
  • Adam M for a full crowd today and Dan being here.
  • Gina S for today’s guests.
  • Wayne D. For the Fall Fest, noting 20,000 people are expected to attend. It benefits the Norma J Ross Foundation, too
  • Mo D (guest speaker) was happy to be here.
  • Lee H shared several interesting items found during our litter clean up on I-675, including a very useful bungee cord and donated the happy buck found on the interstate!
  • Bill M noted we also found an interesting deer skeleton, and several vapes which have lithium ion batteries, so he took them apart and properly disposed of them. The crew gathered 12 bags of trash.
  • Harvey S for Dan being here.
  • Elda GG was happy to be here.
  • Brad H was happy to be back and shared the Rotary Exchange program impacted his life. Their families visit back and forth frequently. Unfortunately, we don’t have a student this year as we need host families before we can host again. This year 3-4 Centerville students expressed an interest to be outbound exchange students next year.
  • Sofie A for Dan, for completing a bike race of 66 miles in Indiana, and daughter Marie-Thérèse is doing well in Netherlands.
  • Ron T is happy to be back after visiting family.
  • Dan J shared the Daddy/Daughter campout was fantastic, welcome back to Dan S, as the club could use more Dans.
  • Dan S was happy to be back - lives in Springboro now, hopes to come back to the club.
  • Jeff S just got back from a Europe trip, followed by a trip to MD to visit their son, and is headed to Cleveland tomorrow to visit those grandkids.
  • Don O shared his grandson turns 42 years old today and is getting ready to run a 100 mile race.
  • Jim H thanks for all here today and the good weather.
  • Dale likes hearing about all the trips everyone is making, so he wanted to share that he and Lynn took a trip to Miamisburg.
  • Carol K was thankful for all the people in this club that do so much work to advance our programs.
  • Chuck K for Dan, and said his wife is finishing up jury duty for a criminal trial. Will fill him in on all the details after it’s over!
  • Ron H for today’s guests and Dan being here today.
  • Bill M shared info about a new partnership between the City and the Library to establish an entrepreneur center, to give opportunities for one on one mentoring sessions for businesses.
  • Pat T was happy for todays guests, and encouraged all to come out to Fall Fest.
  • Rand O for the new Entrepreneurship center.

Our speakers today were Mo Dillon and Tej Joshi with Fox 45/ABC22.

They run the Good Day Dayton segment that runs M-F, 10-11am. All segments are on the website so they can be checked out at your convenience.

The Good Day Dayton segment highlights a lot of local businesses & non-profit organizations. Tej does mostly editorials. Club member, Jake is on the show a lot to promote what’s happening at the Park District. There is typically no charge for segments like that as it is providing a service for the community.

They have two opportunities:
  • Live with Tej in the studio
  • Field location - on site at your business
Each segment is typically 4 minutes long.

They showed an example of a segment they filmed for Beckel’s Humidor. Watch the full segment HERE.

They sometimes get video ahead of time and then input into the live show. They enjoy covering community events, and working with businesses. Please send them story ideas.

Their main goal is supporting the community and bringing positive things in the Miami Valley to the public. They do not cover crime or politics.

The business cost to film a segment is:
$200 studio
$300 field
Nonprofits are usually free. You then keep the video to use however you want.

They then quizzed the club with 10 questions about media and Bill Menker won with all 10 correct!

President Manning thanked our speakers, led the group in reciting the 4 Way Test and wished everyone a good week.
