Speaker of the Week: Mike Watkins, Butler County Chapter of Sleep in Heavenly Peace, which makes and delivers beds to kids without beds.
Vice President Brian Hayes introduced our speaker.
He said Mike Watkins and his wife Eileen live in Monroe and have six kids, three in college. Mike is self employed and does electrical design and programming on factory automated equipment. He received his electrical engineering degree from UD. He served eight years in the Navy in the Nuclear Power Program.
Mike said he and his wife Eileen started SHP in 2018. It is the Butler County chapter of SHP, but he would like to see Montgomery County also become a chapter.
He said a youth church group in Idaho started the original group, putting their work on Facebook. It was a group of high school buddies. He said he didn't realize how big it could be after learning how to start up a chapter. They've built over 900 beds, he said. He wants to get local businesses and churches involves, with the businesses getting their employees to build the beds. He showed a video of the beds being built and delivered and the joy on the faces of the kids getting the beds and their parents seeing their kids have beds. They can do 100 beds in a day, he said. He said the District Conference will be in April and that Wilmington College started a chapter and that Lebanon is going to have one. Word of mouth spreads after they deliver the beds, he said. They get funding through grants and the companies sponsoring building the beds use their own employees as volunteers, so they don't need outside volunteers, he said. When they deliver the beds they deliver a Bible, but they are not pushing any particular religion, he said.
Mike told how the organization got started in Twin Falls, Idaho.
Sleep in Heavenly Peace (SHP) is an American nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization that builds and delivers beds to children who don't have beds to sleep in. Luke and Heidi Mickelson founded SHP in 2012 in Twin Falls, Idaho. As of November 2019, the organization has 200 chapters around the United States and has built over 35,000 beds.[1
When Luke Mickelson was a youth group leader at his church, the group built beds for a member family of the church that was in need. He then built a bed with his family and offered it for free on Facebook. When people in the community heard about the effort, many donated bedding items, which encouraged Mickelson to move forward with the project. The organization grew at such a pace that Mickelson decided to leave his job and run SHP full-time.
The web television series Returning the Favor featured Mickelson and SHP on an episode in February 2018. CNN honored Mickelson as a CNN Hero of 2018.
The Rotary meeting was adjourned with the reciting of the Four-Way Test
